Beware of Ebay Scammers / Account Hackers

I've been finding a lot of phantom bikes on Ebay lately. The scammers list their auctions with stolen passwords. Most of the auctions involve common high-end bikes -- among the ones that I have found are a Cannondale Six 13, Ironman 5000, Madone 5.9, R5000...I have seen others, but I can't recall the the models. These auctions are usually 1 or 3 day listings. Sometimes they are listed from a foreign country, usually in Africa or in Europe. Anyway, the descriptions are vague and usually only include the bikes' specs. Asking the seller a question will reveal something like this:

Thanks for your message. Just got this CANNONDALE bikes for my store
and I
find myself in this uncomfortable situation to sell them over eBay. My
business didn't go so well lately so I have to sell fast to pay the
bills to
my supplier. I had ordered various sizes for this bike so please let me
what frame size (center to center measurement) fits you. Also if you
are not
sure about your size I can make a measurement for you so please inform
if so
and I will email you the details. The best price I can offer you this
for is $1900 USD this including all shipping costs. The bikes are
brand new in box with all the warranty papers for lifetime and be sure
it will be a prompt delivery.
Feel free to ask me any other questions. I'll be waiting for your

With all due respect,

Sometimes the seller won't respond to you; that is because when using ebay's "ask the seller a question" feature, the original account user will receive the email and not the hacker. This, however, is a crapshoot and the hacker may have switched the user's ebay email address. When this happens, be also aware that the scammer may want to complete a deal "under the table" via Western Union (or the like). They may also insist that dealing with him is safe because it will be done under "Ebay protection", which surely does not exist. Do not send money to the listers of these suspicious auctions!

There are other instances in which the lister will have the bidders contact them at a separate email address for "information" regarding payment and shipping because of a problem with the Ebay emailing system. Avoid these auctions or contact the seller with appropriate caution.

The only way I know of hackers hijacking accounts is in the form of a mass email that mimics an ebay message that asks you "verify your Ebay password". DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, click on the link and enter your password!! If you do, then the scammers will steal your account from you and will likely post fraudlent auctions under your name!

I totaly agree, nearly every madone on ebay is a scam. There is one good thing I can say about ebay, and that is there seems to be alot of Fraud finders and ebay police out there bidding on the scam auctions so other people dont.

cannondale and giant do not authorize dealers to sell over the internet, so any "liquidation" of these bikes on ebay is a violation of policy.
i buy alot of bike parts on ebay. when i see a request for western union, i forget about it. lots of people are hating on paypal ( see http://www.paypalsucks.com/ ) but it is the safest way. the drawback is it is *impossible* to lodge a complaint with them. remember, if it is too good to be true, it probably is. if you have the lust, and aren't sure, just wait. another similar item will come up again.
