Moving to Japan. (Yokota)
So looks like I might be heading to Japan.
I currently race MTB and Cyclocross.
I do a lot of training on the road, but don't race.
Any idea of what there is to do out there? Should I part with cross and mtb and get a really good road bike and focus on that?

Yokota? are you in the service? I would put road tires on the cross bike (unless it is a 29er) and take it along. you should also contact people in the company you work for or your new unit and see if anyone there cycles.

Yep in the service. The Cross bike is a race rig. Kind of would like to keep it that way or get a nice road bike. I'm more of a right tool for the job kind of guy.

Stationed in Yokosuka 2000-2002. Yokosuka is relatively congested; I left my road bike in the States and took a mountain bike (no suspension) that I'd rigged with 28mm commuter tires...more like a fast urban assault vehicle. Did lots of riding along roads adjacent to the the bay and ocean, but tended to avoid the congested inner city streets and roads that headed toward Tokyo. Roads are narrow in Japan.
Yokota is located in Fussa, and is on the western edge of Tokyo metro area. However, the "city" rapidly fades away to the west of Fussa. It looks like your cross bike might be the best option. Recommend you contact MWR at Yokota Air Base and see if they can provide contacts with better info.
Also stationed at Offutt 1993-1995; lived in Bellevue. Quite a difference between Nebraska hills and those in Japan; a good bet that your cassette isn't set up for the terrain around Yokota.
Get a bell on your bike, learn to say "sumimasen" as you pass other riders, and enjoy your tour.
