I am pro cycling and a rider, but.....
Had a big ride in our town today. I am not ready for prime time but I went to the finish and cheered the incoming 30 and fast 50 milers. We had a ride participation of about 20% of town's size. So there was an impact to traffic and normal activity. I think collectively the town is very very supportive of this ride.
A little later on, about the time the 100 miler's were coming in, I had to run some errands and noted multiple groups riding three and four abreast, on the streets, still several miles from the finish line. Once, in front of me, a single pace line, "fanned out" to take up one of two lanes, after some idiot blew a horn. Could have been coincidence, but I don't think so.
The local paper's online story of the ride, very positive, is already drawing irate comments from several folks about the multi-bike abreast deal. I don't recognize these posters as the usual loonies that gripe about everything, either.
So...what is the deal? Is it accepted that at the end of the ride it is ok to tie up traffic? Is this just something 100 milers (and I tip my hat big time to them, by the way) do? I just feel bad that folks are pizzed off about such a cool thing as this awesome ride.
Thoughts?

They shut down roads for a whole day for the Grand Tours ,
Maybe someone needs to do advertising on the ride route
to feel they benefit from all those eyeballs going by.
certainly plenty on this site..
