I used to do the same thing, but over the last couple years I just got burned out on riding (this summer was particularly hot, which didn't help any).

I used to think it would be silly to strap the bike onto the truck and drive somewhere to ride the bike, but I have rode for 2+ hours OUT in every direction it is safe to go.
To see anything new it's an all-day ride now, spent mostly going past stuff I have already seen a zillion times.
I am getting more accustomed to the idea of driving further out,,,,, but the weather is cooling off now. It'll be winter soon, and riding won't be much of an option at all (at least recreationally).

Also I bought a kayak this summer, which is great fun--but I have to drive anywhere to use that also.

I generally ride to events. I will drive to long organized rides especially if they are outside of easy biking range. I will drive about 70 miles at most to an organized event unless it is a multiday tour and then I consider it a "vacation" so the distance rules cease to apply. It may not make great sense but theys my rules.

My main reason for riding is so that I don't have to drive, so no miles are driven.

I don't ordinarily drive at all, but last year I drove to Sequoia Nat'l Forest which was about a 5-hour trip. It was worth it.


Lately I really like taking my bike on the train! It's a fun way to explore a new town and see new things. I'm looking forward to a Fall train trip next month with my bike up to San Luis Obispo.

out of my garage hit the road only when i go mountain biking I have to drive roughly 16 miles to the mountan bike park which is the nearest there are two others that are further away.

I bi-modal bike commute, so 55 miles with the bike on the car and then 28 riding each way every day.

Daily rides start from my house.

Group rides are usually in Philadelphia which is about 15 miles away.

Charity rides are usually under 30 miles away.

I have on occasion driven somewhere, like the hair dresser, dropped my grandmother off then did my ride from there. I have very limited time during the week and doing my ride from the random errand location seems to work and mixes it up enough to keep it interesting.

I will drive 25-35 miles on weekends to get to good singletrack for the mtb. Otherwise I start from home.

I'm not comfortable in traffic. I drive my bike to places I feel safe riding.

yesterday I spent just under 5 hrs in the car for just over 3 hrs of cycling. kinda weird

Well I have driven over 100 miles to get to one of my favorite rail trails, the Withlacoochee trail, it's about 92 miles from one end to the other and back, it's a popular trail and there are always other people out there, it goes through at least few town where one could stop for lunch or whatever.

thankfully we can get to any number of the entrances to the major cycling MUP within about 5-10 minutes. and it provides about 40 miles+ of biking round trip.

there are others around the greater houston area but haven't had time to explore them yet.

I'm limited on time and ability (17.7 longest), so for now all road rides originate from my garage. Thankfully I am in a location where I can go multiple directions, and it keeps things fresh. If I were to join a group, or when I hit one of the events I have planned for next year, then I will have to drive 30+ miles for each. I have not partaken in off-road riding as of yet which is weird since all I have is a mountain bike... But, I believe the closest to me is about 20-35 miles.

If they'd ever get the Hanaran Bridge project up and running (converting old car lane on the rail bridge over the Mississippi River), that'd open up a bit more riding area for me in that particular direction.

I may rent a Citibike. Yes, I will probably rent a Citibike. I used to take my bike on the train, but there are restrictions, and it is more convenient to rent.

It is Convenient to ride a train to midtown , and the train brings me to within a half mile of my front door.

Like most folks here, I start most of my rides from my driveway. I generally am too lazy to ride more than 10 or 15 miles to get to an organized ride and so I drive up to 50 miles locally. I drive about 200 miles each year to ride the MS 150 from Houston to Austin. An Awesome ride. The farthest I've gone is from Fort Worth to San Diego, but my children live there and I have a tandem that I ride with my grandchildren.

I go as far as I have to go to get the ride I want. Reasonable distance is not something I have a good grasp of.

Training rides I'll start from my garage. I'll do two or three of those a week on a good week, but the more interesting/adventurous/scenic rides are out of town. For some of those I'll drive an hour and a half, one way. In season I try to do one of those weekly.

Out of season I'll drive almost an hour to ski. Two or three times a week if I get the chance.

Last year I drove from Indy to Burlington, KY (114 miles) for a ride. It was a great ride. Ride to Rabbit Hash.

Rabbit Hash Kentucky is on a route I do a few times a year.


I'll drive 6+ hours to the Blue Ridge Parkway / Asheville NC area, and stay a few days.


Here's two years of local rides in SW Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Most are cycle club rides. Some are ride from home, the rest are mostly a 30 minute drive or less. I really like doing new routes out in the country.

Longest I ever go is about 560 miles. Of course, I also got some paddling, trail running, bluegrass, and drinking in while I was there.

Ideally, I'd ride to wherever the ride started. As it turns out, though, the closest rando rides are two hours away by car, and some of our club rides are an hour away.
