Trunk Racks, Honda Accord, Trunk Accessible?

Hey gang, looking to possibly pick up a trunk rack as a stop gap measure until I can get roof racks. Are there any safe racks that will hold a couple of bikes and a burley- without damaging the car and still allowing trunk access? Thanks!

I did a search and didn't come up with much on my specific car model.

I have a Honda Accord that I picked up a Yakima Little Joe truck rack for at first. It worked fairly well, except that there is not provision to lock the rack to the car (held on by fabric straps) or the bike to either car or rack so I never felt comfortable to leave the bike on the car. Also The accesibility to the trunk is limited with the bikes on the rack, since you have to lift both the trunk and the weight of the bikes. My trunk would not stay open with even one bike on the rack.

I ended up purchasing a roof rack system.

I'm in North Texas, if you want a free Yakima trunk rack your welcome to pick it up!

Can you open the trunk with the bones 3 on it?

I'm wondering if I should just get a Thule system. I had one for my old accord (surfboards) and it was great.

I just have a Bell cheapie trunk rack. With bikes on it, I can open the trunk but it either won't stay open (I have to hold it) or it stays open but can potentially slam shut (depending on which car I have it on) so I have to be very careful around it. When there are no bikes on the rack the slamming shut risk is greatly reduced although I'm still cautious. I have no idea if my rack could hold a Burley (I assume you mean bike trailer).

I made a half roof rack /half trunk rack, with a rail across the rear of the roof and the 2nd rail on the trunk lid.

It was a hatchback. there is weight to lift of course.. and you will want to make a prop
to hold up the weight, then while the boot is open.

There is a fuel consumption cost with a roof load, Its less if you slow down.

I have never seen a strap-mounted trunk rack that will allow you to open the trunk safely with bikes mounted. A hitch-mounted rack will allow you to do that though.

well...yes, but the bicycles have to come off, and the rack has to move a bit, so if that is what you mean by trunk access, then you have *limited* trunk access with the saris

"Safely" to me means being able to lift it without undoing the straps. If someone thinks they can just rely on the trunklid's gas struts to hold up an additional 50-70 lbs (depending on the rack load), they're an idiot and deserve any head-bashing they get... which will either knock some sense into them or won't affect them at all anyway.

I can strap my rack completely to the hatchback on my Civic, FWIW. The one thing to look out for on other cars is whether the hooks can fit in the seam around the trunklid.

My thoughts exactly. No trunk lid is ever going to hold up a rack and a bike safely. To anyone who wants to be able to open trunk while a bike is on a rack, I say get yourself a hitch rack or a roof rack.

I'll take my chances. I only paid $10 for my trunk rack on CL and I know to be careful with it. I had the rack on the trunk for two weeks plus during my vacation and was in and out of the trunk all the time with no issues. (Taurus)

(don't know why I didn't think about this before)

Of course, if you pop the bikes off, it's a lot easier to open the trunk with the rack still attached.

I didn't expect to open the trunk with bikes on it. Was more thinking of access while leaving it on w/o bikes.

That makes it a lot simpler. Not sure why we went on a tear talking about opening the trunk with the bikes still on the rack.

I was thinking about this earlier today when I was looking at a Hyundai Genesis Coupe. In that particular case, I'd look at a hitch rack -- not just for bikes, but I'd also use it to carry racing tires to an autocross or dragstrip.
