Looking for 1" threaded mtn fork
I don't have an upgraded membership for the marketplace so I apologize if I'm not supposed to post this here.
Anyone have an old fork lying around or know of any used parts stores around Orange County, California? I need a rigid 1" threaded fork with about a 5" stearer tube and cantilever brake mounts. This is going on a 90's Specialized Hardrock Mtn Bike that I'm rebuilding on the cheap. Don't know much about mtn bikes or threaded forks so let me know if I missed something, thanks. Ian |
Ian, you are permitted to look there I and think you can even post that you are looking for something. But you cant post to sell something with out a membership.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I'll try my luck and see if I can post there.

Ian Here's a pic. It's off a 1991 Fuji Professional mt. bike, it's Tange steel, with exactly 5" measured from the bottom of the fork race to the top, with 30mm of thread. It's also this buffly lavender. It's free but is it worth the $10 or $15 shipping ?. Let me know Steve B. |
It looks great and as long as it is straight with no cracks it's definitely worth the shipping. Just want to double check the measurements: 1x5 inch stearer tube and this is for a 26" wheel with 9mm axle, correct? It really does look great and if everything checks out you can get back to me whenever you figure out the shipping costs and let me know how you want to be paid. Really psyched I finally got the fork I was looking for, thanks!

I will double check all measurements, but it's off a 1991 Fuji Professional steel, 26" mt. bike (that now has a Rock Shock fork). Canti/V brakes. Certainly a 1" steerer as in '91 then hadn't yet gone to 1-1/8". Only issue I had with it was the steerer tube being somewhat short and requiring a short stack threaded headset (original was a Ritchey) and short stack being hard to find. But again. will double check measurement of the steerer length. Let me box it up and take to a UPS store for a shipping price - what zip code ?. It's free, like I said as I have zero use for it and it's sitting in my basement collecting mold, just shipping. Steve B. |
Sounds perfect, I'll PM you my address.
edit* I forgot I'm not allowed to PM yet so can you email me about the best way to pay you after you figure out shipping? I'll reply with my *address when you do. Zipcode 92821. |
If Steve's fork doesn't work out for some reason, check thrift shops for something you can cannibalize. At least around here, they're full of old rigid-fork mountain bikes, usually for $25 to $50. I bought a Specialized Hard Rock a year or so ago with a computer, Blackburn rack, new tires and a decent saddle for $19.95.

It's going to be at least Tuesday before I can box and get an answer from UPS. I'll let you know then

Thanks for the tip Velo Dog. Even though Steve's fork looks perfect I'll have to check out the thrift stores for any other parts I'll need. I can't believe you got that Hard Rock for $19.95.
Steve, sounds great, thanks for doing all this for me. I'll be waiting to hear from you about the shipping costs. |

So I pack the fork into a box that formerly held a Profile carbon road fork, shove some wrapping paper and take it to the UPS store to find out how much to ship to zip code 92821. The kid tells me $14, regular ground, no insurance. Then another $10 for the shipping box, plus another $10 to re-pack. Uhh ?. The Profile box is all black and says on the side "Profile Carbon Fork" and the kid has decided that "somebody might see the label and steal the box". Quote un-quote. Thus he's decided it needs a new box and that costs, plus extra for the labor. I then ask "Who besides UPS employees are going to be handling or seeing this box once I hand it over to you ? and are you telling me they might steal the box". To which he says "Yeah, that's what I mean". I then tell him "If that's the case, I'll take it to FedEx or the Post Office". The manager then steps in and says the box is fine. So you want I should send ?, I assume no insurance as the fork has no value. But I need your address and either you post on-line or PM me. The box will have my address in it and you can send me $14 cash or a check. Will that work ? And if this is too much hassle that's OK as well. Steve B. |
Haha, guess they perked up once they heard you were taking your business elsewhere. Everything sounds great and if you have a PayPal account I'd be willing to transfer the money to you so that it is immediately available. Your choice, all I need is your email address to send you the payment and you can PM it to me or if you click my username you can use the 'send email' option. My address is --. If you need anything else I'll have to post it on this thread or reply to an email because I'm not allowed to use Private Messages yet.
Edit* Oh, and if they give you a tracking number do you mind sending that to me in a PM or email? Thanks. |
PM sent
