I was just curious, because some people on these forums mentioned the 4 or 7 bicycles they have, and I wonder what different uses they have of them. I can see 2 bikes as a minimum necessity--one with rack/panniers/basket for commuting/utility/errands, and a light stylish one for road. But more than 5, that becomes collection.
Classic road bike for fast pleasure rides.
Modern road bike for racing.
Utility bike for pulling trailer, carrying panniers, maybe even touring.
Rigid MTB for fast, fairly smooth trail rides.
Full Suspension XC MTB for gnarlier trail rides.
CX bike for Cyclocross races.
Tandem for double your pleasure rides.
Track bike for the velodrome.
Vintage cruiser cuz the chix dig it.
Recumbent for big sky cycling!
OK, so ten is the magic number!
For me, anyways.

1) '08 Cervelo Soloist Team. Road race bike
2) '08 Fetish Ankh CX. CX bike, but also fills the need for a light duty MTB
3) '89 Trek 660 fixed gear conversion. Commuter, but also for fun
4) '86 Gazelle Champion Mondial. Vintage race bike
5) '00 Trek 5200 -- torn down; soon to be built back up as a rain trainer.
I'd also love to have:
6) TT bike
7) track bike
8) a balloon tire cruiser
9) a utility bike for hauling stuff to the kids' soccer and little league games

I use to own about 50 bikes at one time or another (mostly steel low-mid range, one ti, 5 aluminum) At one point I had about 35 bikes in a 450sq foot studio. A friend wanted to make a documentary about it.
Now I have a modest collection of three:
'99 Lemond Buenos Aires
'08 Trek 520
'85 Trek 620
Though, I'm thinking of changing my fleet to the following:
'11 Motobecane Le Champion Ti Heat
'10 or '11 Surly Long Haul Trucker
A 853, OX, or Prestige steel rigid fork hardtail
A folding bike with 20" wheels or maybe a Swift folder, a bike friday NWT would be nice
...and maybe a singlespeed
That should do nicely.

i have:
--rivendell atlantis (26" rims).
--dekerf HT generation (my pocket rocket/french comfort bike tweaked) has new rear rack --brazeons to take panniers up to 50 lbs load (so this could even a be a rugged touring bike aside from a great winter bike/singletrack/2nd commuter)....
the dekerf was bought from a shop in which all $$ goes towards street kids, so i guess the cycling karma gods were good to me as it's an amazing bike to ride...wasn't aware of dekerf's great name 'til after I was out riding it and got envious comments/looks from other riders (and bike shop owners)
--potential buy 2002 marinoni ciclo: was to buy new rando (started a separate thread on this) but a local rider saw a posting on their rando club link and offered me her 2002 marinoni ciclo for cdn$800ish...has chorus gruppo'd, but told the ambrosia wheelset needs to be replaced in a few seasons...got serial number and confirmed the geo/size with Marinoni HQ (my size give or take 1cm)...it hasn't been ridden in 2 yr since they bought 2 new custom Naked Bikes...off to see it tonight or on wkend.

Barring the green Talera at the back that is my wifes bike- all get ridden regularly.
road bikes- OCR3 as a beater and for putting the Charity Placard on the back-Boreas and the TCR are the main road bikes- FCR1 as the commuter. Kona Explosif and Bianchi Grizzly are the main MTB's and the F/S giant was a mistake but does get ridden on the Hardpack in the summer The Full Offroad Tandem does get out if I can find some idiot that wants to find out how to if they like Offroad downhills at full bore.
Think I have enough for now But thinking about a Cyclocross for the Future.

A) Specialized Secteur Elite - This is my fair weather, Primary Commuter & Century bike
B) Trek FX 7.2 Modified Hybrid - This is my poor weather, Secondary commuter & touring bike
Both bikes are equipped with a rear Topeak quick track rack system & SPD peddles. The lighting easily moves from 1 bike to the next as does the blackberry mount.
1 bike is no more or less important than the other, each bike serves its purpose. I look at both bikes & support equipment as my investment rather than the individual bikes.

The Giant TCX 2 is what I use for commuting and general road riding for fitness. It's the perfect all around bike - option for panniers, can run knobbies for cross or slicks for fast road riding (which is what I run most of the year with fenders).
I bought another bike, a 2010 Trek 2.1 to use when I visit family in the south. Instead of packing a bike on a plane and disassembling and reassembling it every time, not to mention the freight charges on airlines, I opted to leave it with my parents, already in tact, so I have something to ride when I visit. Some folks have multiple homes around the country - why not multiple bikes?

For now, I have 2 I ride. Both serve pretty much the same purpose for now, I just go on which ever one I feel like riding. Once winter comes around I'll just be riding the GT.
For bikes I'd like to add to that, I have a Free Agent BMX frame and a SA 3-speed hub, once I get the other parts needed it should be a fun bike. I'd also like a fixed gear and a regular 3-speed. Once I have those, I'll probably come up with more to get.

4 that I actually use. My regular ride, one for the rain, one for the trainer, and an MTB. I have another, but I don't ride it. My wife uses it for a commuter instead. There are more bikes here though.

I have five
1110091659..jpg
I use this one mainly around the farm for but I take it to college with me to haul groceries and it has rod holders for when I go fishing
1111091700..jpg
One of my mountain bikes, I mainly just use this one for going to class, especially when its wet since this one has fenders; you could call this my rain bike
0318001511..jpg
Road bike
0316001846..jpg
Mountain bike, my favorite one to take to class or to mess around in the mud

This is my newest bike I'm currently in the process of painting it
