Chains... purchse tips?
So my chain is about two years old, and it's already showing it's age with a decent amount of unreliability. I figure it's about time for a chainge (see what I did there?) and am looking through JensonUSA for some new chains. However, there are too many options (9-speed, Shimano) and I'm hesitant to go the cheap-o route, but at the same time hesitant to spend more than I need.
What's the deal with the pricing points of chains, at least for Shimano? Is there a "best compromise"? Obviously, I don't need Dura-Ace, but even that chain is only $50 or so, which makes me feel like I should buy it simply because it doesn't seem so expensive (though, obviously, it's the fact that it adds up). Edit: fuuu I typo'ed the title :( |
Best bang for your buck: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...eed+Chain.aspx
I got it on of my bikes. Good shifting. |
SRAM PC-971. Better chain than Shimano and nickel plated so doesn't rust as bad.
http://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...hain+2010.aspx If you're having major issues with the chain now it may be shot so bad that you'll have to replace the cassette also. You'll know for sure when you put the new chain on if it skips. |
Sram chains are easier to adjust with a chain tool. The Powerlink connecting link is very effective. Within the SRAM pecking order there are differences in finish and rust resistance but they all work pretty much the same.

I once read somewhere that you should use Shimano chains with Shimano cassettes and SRAM chains with SRAM cassettes due to the minor manufacturing differences. Is this not true?

That said, speeds don't cross over well- ie: using a 9speed chain on an 8 speed bike, and Campy is in about a world of it's own |
