Hi everyone!! For fitness reasons I've decided to try cylcing. After reading some of the different posts I've decided to buy a used bike rather then buy new because I really didn't want to dropp a lot of $$ to begin with. As it is it looks like I'm still spending more then I expected.

Anyway I found a bike on the local craigs list and I thought I'd run it past everyone here just to make sure I'm not going to pay to much for the bike. The owner is asking $900 for the bike and other equipment. Is this a decent price for this bike and the equipment he's selling?

I have seen bikes of that caliber sell on ebay for around $600-$750. I would pass. You can buy a better bike on ebay with $900.

It really depends on its condition and fitting, bu the line "Original Kenda Tires" makes me wonder. If original means "3-4yrs old", it sounds like owner didn't really ride on it so nicer condition can be expected. Anyway I recommend you to wear better tires, and also, sunglasses and helmet are the must.

And if I were you, wouldn't buy. There are better deal on eBay, as 531phile suggests

the biggest thing is fit. if the bike doesn't fit you, no price is good enough. if the bike does indeed fit you, then.....

if $ 900 includes the bike, new shoes in your size, and a trainer, it sounds worth it. to buy a bike, computer, shoes, saddlebag and tool kit, and trainer will probably cost you more than $900. of course, if you end up using the trainer twice and realize riding a bike outside is way more fun, and you already have a tool kit and don't need a saddlebag, then it might not be worth it as much. otherwise, i will be different here and say the package sounds like a good deal.

I skipped that it includes trainer. If BP348 will use it, that's a nice deal.

If all of this fits such as the bike, shoes, etc. I would go in and see if he'd take 650 for it. This is the off-season for road bikes so they may not be getting many bites. That's the great thing about craigslist is you can haggle the price.

Definitely haggle. But that's an assumption that this is off season. We don't know where the OP lives, and in some places the season is just getting started.

One thing of note: This bike does not have a full 105 group on it. Both brake calipers and crankset are sourced from other component makers to save money. The 105 "group" comprises shifters and derailleurs only

Haggle like crazy or pass.

Of course YMMV but patience can save a bundle of cash...

A bike that is two years old and in good condition will only fetch around 50% of the original selling price. There may be a lot of "Spares included but 3 Saddles? TT Bars? Original Kenda tyres? Spares and fittings that you would never use.

And you are buying the bike. Even at $600 the bike would have to be in tip top condition to warrant that price and unless it has been stored for a long time- It will not be in that state.

Thanks for all the help. From what I understand the owner used to ride it quite a bit but in the last year or so has tapered off due to the birth of a child.

When I decided to try cycling I told my self I would spend somewhere between $500 - $700 for a bike. I'm supposed to met him on Monday so I guess i'll offer $650 - or $700 and see if he takes it. I'm also planning on going to the local bike shop Monday morning so I'll see what they have to offer in that price range as well. I should add that there is a lot of stuff/equipment that I'm guessing he has replaced and is giving the originals away with the bike. Pretty much everything under the trainer is not on the bike anymore. Not listed but part of the deal is a helmet and a car rack.

BTW I'm in the South Texas area, Near Corpus Christi so maybe the San Antonio or Austin craigs list will have a better deal. Id check ebay but I honestly have no idea what to look for.

Not sure if its permissible to post a link but if anyone is that interested the bike is listed in the Corpus Christi craigs list. I believe under October 6th.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I purchased the bike today. Offered $700 and the owner decided he'ed take it if he could keep the tool kit. Since I don't know enough about bikes and I'm not a very hands on guy any way I didn't think it was a deal breaker.

The owner and I were just about the same height and he helped me lower the seat which was the only adjustment he thought needed to be done. The helmet and shoes fit well and I'm going to the LBS tomorrow to buy some bike shorts. I wanted a bike that was more middle of the road so I wouldn't have to upgrade in 5 months and I think that's what I got. Thanks everyone, I'm looking forward to my first ride tomorrow.
