The cheap ones tend to not have image stabilization, which results in a lot of artifacting when you're moving. It'll be viewable, but it probably won't be good enough for posting it to YouTube.

I've been vaguely considering a Flip camera mounted to the head tube on my bike, if I can pick up one with image stabilization. I tried an 808 camera and it was probably worth the $12 it cost shipped, but not much more than that...

Considering your recent experiences with cars, you might want to consider riding with a helmet, period.

Life in a hospital bed as a traumatic brain injury vegetable is not much of a life at all.

From what i have researched, it seems like GoPro is the best helmet cam's out there... I may be wrong, but that is the research i have seen. The non-HD ones aren't too $$

That's a tactic to avoid paying much in Ebay fees. Doesn't mean the product itself is bad.

Although, for $35, I wouldn't expect much.

I've heard good things about the Contour too.

There's a thread in the electronics forum about helmet cams.

I had a Tachyon XC-Micro. I don't recommend it. It kept shutting itself off; the longest recording I ever got out of it was a bit over 5 minutes. Finally, it got to the point that it wouldn't even turn on. I opened the case and discovered the harness to the switches was poorly constructed. The wires were too big to go through the holes in the control board, so they were just tacked in place with a dot of solder. No mechanical connection. One wire had come off and several others were only touching with a single strand of the stranded wires. The only reason it had worked at all was because the loose end had sort-of been held in place by the case, and vibrations would cause a gap which turned the camera off. As I'm sure you can guess, their tech support told me that opening the case to see what was up voided my warranty. The connections were too small to do by hand, so now the thing is in pieces, in a baggie. Maybe someday I'll get the right equipment to put it back together. OTOH, maybe in a few years prices will have dropped so that it won't be worth the bother. I'm looking at getting a ContourHD as a replacement.

Pics I've seen from the GoPro look good. Maybe it'd work as a handlebar camera, but I would not want something that big on my helmet.

yea. i have been researching it mostly for snowboarding/kayaking, i don't think the chest strap would be comfortable on a bike either

I have one and it's not any worse that having a headlight or a blinkie on your helmet.

I'd rather have higher res stills taken at an interval, rather than video. So far I've only seen this on expensive cameras. Anyone seen this at <$100?

Hmmm... kind of like this, but shorter interval and higher resolution? http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/pets/afbc/

Starting to get tired of a small number of cantankerous urban motorists, with one deciding to get a little to close for comfort, so a GoPro HD is now on order to watch my back, and a Contour HD helmet cam is on next month's budget list to watch the front.

Has anyone found a review of the new Tachyon XC HD? I haven't been able to find any independent reviews on it since it started shipping.
