Isn't Posting Stolen Bike Serial numbers dangerous?

I'm a serious Craigslists lurker. And I see stolen bikes listing with the owner posting the whole serial number for everyone to see. Isn't this dangerous? Couldn't anyone use this number and then claim to be the original owner if they happen to see the bike?

Wouldn't it be smarter to post half of the number and then say that you will provide the other half once you see the bike in person?

I doubt it matters.

The bike's already gone so what else is there to lose. I'm thinking recovering a stolen bike by posting the serial number on Craigs List is pretty long odds at best.

I would think the National Bike Registry would be a better alternative than posting your serial number on CL.

I was checking out their site, they have a listing of the Law Enforcement agencies that use their database, turns out, my local police departments use it.

Me and you both are serious CL lurkers..:D

On your question, if www.stolenbicycleregistry.com can post serial numbers of stolen bikes, IMO, it must not be dangerous.

Here is an example.. and they have hundreds of #numbers posted..
