double bike rack for Beetle convertible

I just parted with 1 of my Pickup trucks for a VW Beetle rag top and I will need to be able to carry 2 bicycles at a time on occasion. Can anyone recommend a decent bicycle transport rack for this car.

With a rag top convertible, obviously a roof rack is out of the question.. That leaves you with either a strap-mounted trunk rack (don't know how well that will work with your VW Bug's curved rear end), or buy a hitch and a hitch-mounted bike rack.

I would tend to favor a hitch plus hitch-mounted rack. You should check U-Haul's website and see if they have a hitch available for your VW Bug's particular model year.

I was going to recommend a Saris Bones 2 but the Saris website says there are no truck racks available. Looks like you'll have to lay out big bucks for a hitch rack.

So as to clarify, New Bug?, this is not the classic air cooled motor Bug?

receiver hitch under the rear mounted motor
would make dropping the engine
which is quite straightforward, usually..
more problematic.

One of my family members uses a hitch-mount rack on her new model bug- Thule T2. Has worked quite well for several years so far.

I am going to go with a receiver hitch style bicycle rack. It will also let me lock my bike to the car when I'm at the gym. I'm off the bike till daylight savings in March anyway so I have some time to get it all together.
