OK, I told you guys I would get into the house to take a few Before pictures of the shop area. I believe it is setup perfectly as a place to have a bike shop. Let me know what you think. I will Rid the garbage when I move in.

The Cabinet work is already there and will prove to be useful as a work bench and tool bench.

looks like there is plenty of room to work on bike. that cabinet will make a great work bench. it saves you from having to build or buy one.

My sentiments exactly. I will most likely use the space to the right and to the left of the cabinets for the bike storage and set the work stand/s up on the left side of the room/area. I will also have anywhere from 2-4 bins and 3 Milk crates for organization. Between my girlfriend and I, we will have 5-6 complete bikes and 2-3 frames and parts on the minimum plus 4 or 5 sets of wheels not on bikes. So being neat and organized will help a great deal with making the space usable and efficient.

if there was not a drop ceiling in my work area i would probably hang my bikes from the roof. right now i just put them where i can fit them. i have 1 hook the ceiling in my bedroom for storing a bike. it gets used once and a while.

I remember the old days when I had to share space with a car and had to pull my bikes out just to get to my bench... I also had half a dozen hooks on the other side of the garage to store bikes.

Ok, finally all settled into the new digs. I will try and get the shop setup along with some pictures up by the end of tomorrow, depending on my work schedule.

It certainly could. It could also make your a slave to storing other peoples garbage at some point. But computers is what I do for a living, so I see far worse collections than that.

nah. i will never be a slave to storing other peoples garbage unless it is extremely cool or something i can use. i kind of collect computers but have not found any within the last year that was worth picking up. currently i am working on sorting through all my stuff and downsizing. i know i have about 2-4 dead motherboard that i was meaning to get rid of but just didn't happen because of the flood. if i ever see a computer with 5 1/4 floppy drive i usually will pick it up.

Growing up using the Trash 80, Apple 2 whatevers, VIC 20's, Commadore 64's ... I can proudly say I no longer know how to boot them up. Although I do miss the old Infocom games on the Comm 64.

Not to distract the thread from vintage computer talk, but I finally got the shop setup and took a couple pictures. Still no place for the wheels or no hooks to hang bikes from yet. (there will be 2-4 more bikes added to the shop)

Sorry about the lighting, I was experimenting with shooting in dark exposure and lighting it through effects, it did not work.

so far it looks like you have a pretty good setup. it definitely looks like you have way more free space than i do. after i get my truck on the road and get a few extra dollars i plan on finishing my work bench and building a custom shelving unit. i have priced out what i need and it is only going to cost me less than $100 in supplies.

yes. There is even more room than I anticipated, but maybe thats just cause I dont have everything there yet. I could push the workstand back closer to the wall if I need more room in the middle. If I get ride of all that crap along the back wall it will add quite a bit more, but I don't know what I would do with all of that. I would put it under the deck, but I need to room for my two kayaks.

Crazy- What kind of shelving system are you going with? L Brackets and shelving or a stand up unit?

i am going to build a stand up unit out of 2x4's and ply wood. a sheet of 8'x4' ply wood is only $20 and 2x4 are only about $2.50 each. i was also thinking about using some L brackets and putting a small shelf above my work bench.

I am only renting for now, so I can't do too much damage in terms of putting things on the wall. I would have to go with a freestanding unit myself But I really think I have plenty of space for now and when I add the hooks for the wheels and bikes it will be even better I think.

my work bench is free standing and the shelfing unit i plan on building will be also. the shelf above my workbench i plan on bolting to the work bench. the 2x4's on the back of my work bench go from the ground to the roof.

Yes, I see that now. In the pictures they look more like 4x4s but I am sure it is just perception. Looks like the perfect place to mount L Brackets for shelving. When building the free standing unit, make sure to use a drill and screws and not hammer and nail as it has potential to be moved and knocked into quite a bit.
