Unicycle
I just spent 90 minutes trying to learn how to ride a unicycle I bought on CL.
It was my first time ever trying one out but I had been wanting one for some time. At the end of the 90, I was able to traverse about 20-25 feet before bailing. Not bad, I think. The session ended when an SUV with three teen girls blocked the path I was using to practice. Seriously made no sense. The ENTIRE parking lot was empty and they park in the one spot I was using. Oh well, I was getting hungry anyway. |
My first experience on a unicycle was at the last juggling festival I went to; I tried to learn for about 30 minutes and couldn't go more than a few feet without needing a shoulder beside me. Since then I've learned to ride a bike a long while with no hands so I wonder if I can find that kind of equilibrium on a unicycle; I'm always impressed when I see people who commute around campus on them, or this guy:

Today gave me an entirely new appreciation of this guy.http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/...04bbeee2_z.jpg
If you are ever in Baltimore, check him out. He works at the Harbor. Since then I've learned to ride a bike a long while with no hands so I wonder if I can find that kind of equilibrium on a unicycle |
I learned how to ride a couple of years ago. It was a slow process, and it sounds like you are learning faster than i did. Keep at it.
One thing I learned was that when you start off, it's a lot of work to maintain control, and therefore some good leg exercise. As you get better, you get more relaxed, and it loses some of the exercise benefit- a lot like walking then. Lots of good information here, if you're interested: http://unicyclist.com/forums/ |
Thanks for the link Stephen, I will add it to my favorites.
I went out again for about an hour and took a tape measure. I can now hit 25 feet with ease, 50 feet with a bit of determination and focus and 100 feet with luck. I hit the hundred mark twice! I know it doesnt seem like a lot but its my first day. Im happy. |
You've inspired me to look for a unicycle. Seems like a lot of fun.

Remember, you dont have to be a gymnast to get back on the horse. |
