Good handle grips?
 

Hello :)

I'm had my Land Rover G4 for about a year. It's fantastic and its been brilliantly comfortable to ride for hours on end. Part of this is down to the handlegrips, which although they were the standard parts are incredibly comfortable. Sadly, they're quite worn out, to the point where when I ride in wet weather without gloves I have to concentrate to not fall off!

So, can anyone recommend any good, squidgy, fairly cheap handlegrips that would suit a mountain bike? I've tried bikes with the shaped kind of grips and didn't get on with them as they meant I couldn't easily adjust my position, or ride one handed (:eek:) so can anyone recommend any round ones I'd be interested in?

Hand grips are one of those really personal choices. What one rider loves will cause the next rider will turn their nose up.

The last ones that I bought were Dimension hand stitched leather for my recumbent. They feel nice to me and I've gotten complimented on them. I think that they'll get even better looking as they age.

I've looked lustfully at Brooks leather ring hand grips. They come in black or honey and are length adjustable. I think they'd be neat to have but I've never seen a pair in the flesh and they are hyper expensive.

I put these on my new bike while I was trying to decide on a 'good' pair. I got a pleasant surprise in that these grips are both comfortable and durable. A winning combo in my book! I stopped looking for any better grips 'cause , for me, these do a great job!!!!

Bar grips are a personal thing that will differ from rider to rider. I have always got on with a fairly firm grip that does not have a great deal of give in it. Plenty of them about but best thing to do is go to your LBS and try the grips of a few bikes on display. Then buy the ones similar to the feel you like.

It seems you're right - handlegrips seem to be a very personal thing.

I can't say that having leather is an entirely practical choice for a mucky mountain bike, but they certainly sound like my kind of thing :)

I'm struggling to find something at my LBS, as I live in a pretty rural area (lots of high speed hills :speedy:) so it's a very small choice. I'm going into a major town this weekend, so I should be able to find something nice there.

Can anyone recommend any major brands that might be any good? As far as I've seen, Selle Royal's choice only seem to be these shaped things. :(

I am a figure 8 like trekking bar convert, the Mountain bike controls slide on/off nicely,
without undoing the bar covering once the job is done.
many places to hang on, ie, includes a lot of variety of hand grips.

and Though there are some foam sleeves, I like using the road bike 'cork' padded tape.
and make the surface bigger , with 2 layers, I wrap the old stuff on first.. .

Would Ergon grips be too radically-shaped for ya? I love mine. I've got the GP1 model.

ODI. I have them on all my mountain bikes. I like the Ruffian and Yeti, but if your hands are big, you may prefer the Rogue. No ergonomic weirdness that limits hand position, lots of tackiness. If you don't mind paying a little extra, the lock-ons are great for easy install/uninstall and also they don't spin. If not, their dual-ply aren't that bad either. I've also heard good things about the Lizard Skins Peaty and Sunline Half-Waffle but have no first-hand experience.

They are a bit too "radical" for me - in fact, I think that's about as radical as I've seen! I think the competition series is the kind of stuff I'm looking for, but as far as I can work out they're WAAAAY too much!

Those ergon grips are being rated highly by everyone I know that has taken a chance on them. Not that I would as they are too radical for me but at the LBS I often hear people raving about them. Mainly riders that have had a hand numbness problem but as I say- I have not heard a bad word about them by those that have taken the chance.

But another vote for the "Yeti" grips. Have them on the MTB and my position on the Tandem. A Thicker firm rubber that suits me.

Believe it or not, for one bike with which I had been using them, I got to dislike the single hand position. As nice as those grips were for me (still have them on the MTB, though), and although my hands didn't go numb with them, I wanted more body positions for longer rides.

So, I converted that bike to drop bars. ;)

I'll keep looking for the Ergons - maybe I can find them cheaper somewhere.

WRT the ODI's - the Yeti grips look as though the pattern on them would get a bit irritating. Has anyone found this so far?

Also, has anyone tried using the ODI Ruffians? The pattern looks similar to what I currently have, but lots of people say that the pattern wears off too quickly, which is the problem I have with my original Landy ones.

So has anyone had any experience with the ODI's? They certainly seem to be more in my kind of price range!

I wouldn't know (even if I rode ODIs), because I pretty much always wear gloves when I ride. Keeps my fingers from getting slippery with sweat in the summer, keeps the cold out in the winter, keeps my hands cleaner, helps prevent road rash on my palms, etc. Also keeps the surface of any grips or bar tape from irritating my hands.

Anyway, I usually wear gloves, but sometimes it's nice to just ride bare handed, especially in Summer, when it eventually gets here!

The pattern on the Yeti is meant to put padding under your palm and grip under your fingers.

I see, though I can still see myself being irritated (I'm like that)!

I've now ordered a set of ODI Cush MTB's - they're in my price range and the reviews say they were pretty comfy. Worth a shot :)

Now I just need to find a way of making them not spin. My standard ones don't spin, but I have a horrible feeling the new ones might once I've been mucking about with WD-40 to get the old ones off...

Not to be a pain the grips I linked to are 99% like an Ergon grip which is why I stopped looking for "better" grips. These simple cheap grips are a huge bargain for $8.16 a pair!!
