Nexus Internal 8 speed Issues - Spinning and not going in gear

Hello
My 2010 Breezer Uptown 8 will randomly begin having issues catching a tooth or something. I will try to shift and the cranks will spin, not catch a gear, or take a few seconds to catch the gear in less dramatic rides.

Sometimes... I swear, it shifts quite well. Sometimes it is only during a full ride it will be touchy the whole time and other times it will shift very normal. Odd?

I know the shop will likely just take care of the issue, whatever adjustments or repairs are needed since it is only 6 months max old... but I wonder what the issue is?

Thanks,
Kenny

My first guess would be cable adjustment. New cables will stretch and need periodic adjustment for a few months. The second guess would be insufficient internal lubrication. Hopefully your shop will get you fixed up and rolling. I do most of my own maintenance, even on my IGH hubs. I prefer oil bath and have converted several of my out of warranty hubs to oil rather than grease.

Adjust the shifter to fourth gear.
Turn your bike upside down.
Look at the rear hub, there is a green dot on the hub and one on the shifter -
in fourth gear they should line up. If not, adjust the cable take up until they do line up.

Probably just a simple cable adjustment.

Thanks!! I will take a peak at the green dot dealio too! But yeah, it is rougher to shift as well... might need some lube too!

Awesome, thank you! Where/how do we lubricate these babies?
After about ~2,000 miles, mine isn't quite as bad off as the OP's, but it's still getting a little notchy when shifting in dodgy situations.

Thanks.
Nuts. Seeing so many Shimano lube products that come in the little bottles with the pointed applicator-tip made me think there was a simple hole or someplace where I could squirt it in, like a zerk-fitting.
But according to Sheldon, it's fully sealed. Nuts. Hopefully the fine-tuning/adjustment will be enough.

When I first got my 7spd IGH I had trouble with 4 & 5 gears and didn't understand how to adjust it. So off to my friendly LBS where the mechanic took one look at it and started fiddling with the cable at the shifter while we chatted. Next I knew he said.....It's should be ok now.

Huh? I didn't see him do anything! :twitchy:

So I ask him what'd you do? He said your hub was a bit out so I just lined up the marks. What marks says I? These yellow marks here says he. So I paid him $5 for adjusting the cable and $5 for the lesson on the hub that I got! :innocent:
