Here in So.Cal. we have had three days of rain...I have worked the last three days...Time for a ride....Much of this and I will be heading towards a 35 pound weight gain..Bored. Ate one too many peanut butter sandwiches...Tried to read. Too tired from long work hours..
Here, used to perfect riding weather..So, we wait it out..Day four...Is there life without cycling...Any other Southern Californians going crazy from withdrawl and fearful of getting on the scales. Stuck in the house. A day of overeating..Wife just got home from work and wants to go out and eat..I know I could have gotten out the trainer, but that is still too close to the refrigerator . And my wife suspects a day of riding ruins one for being too tired to go out when she gets home... After a long boring day, a nap seems in order to cure boredom..

There is a quick and easy alternative if you choose not to ride in the rain, darkness and cold:

Run!

30 minutes of running will provide a nice workout, release feel-good chemicals in your brain and curb weight gain.

oh just go for a ride in the rain. So far I have ridden through everyday of rain, water-proof jacket and some glasses to keep the water out of your eyes are all you need!

If your that desparte for a ride, just go in the rain. It dosn't hurt if you have good weather proof clothing...although i must add, clean your bike down at the end, because parts can get damged if left wet. I used to always run in the mornings, but when i started riding my riding's replaced my running. Running just isn't fun enough, and you accomlish more riding i feel.

Can't run..My knees rebelled long ago. Used to enjoy it..As long as I had my headphone on.
Have gone out in the rain on my bike..But, would only go out on the hybrid..Will not subject my good bikes to rain in their bottom brackets...Liked hybrid for riding in the rain..Wider tires...Not as fussy about it, that it might melt...
Replace it maybe I will go out in the rain...My wife backed into it in the garage and ruined the seat stay..Even tho I have good rain gear, just not as fun as in the sunshine...Cold, wet feet just are not fun...Withdrawl gets severe enough, I will give in and not miss out on my miles.

You can always ride indoor as an alternative. I know its not as good as riding out. But at least your still riding your bike...

Yes there is. Although we think our lives revolve around bikes and our biking. We still have family and friends..and this forum , to keep us alive .

Try dealing with monsoon season. So yes I suppose there is life w/o a bike. Of course since bikes are THE main sourse of transportation here, rain doesn't stop biking

Pyze...Good to hear from others' from outside the so called 'First World'. Whatever, that is...Poverty is East St.Louis, Illinois is supposed to have child Death rates as high as those in Africa.
But anyway..India is in the Northern Hemisphere. I read a Typhoon is currently hitting Southern Japan. So is it currently Moonsoon season in India? One time we visited our nephew in Singapore...Wanted to visit Thailand,but it was Moonsoon season in ****et..That was in July I think?
Bangalore, India...Maybe you are lucky No Crowded freeways.?But the streets can be filled with bikes that don't have open spaces for bike travel? Good to hear from you...
ps-- As I have stated...Riding in the rain, might be ok...But, here in SO Cal it only rains when it is chilly...Wet, damp feet are for muskrats. So, hope of clearing today. Might ride in the afternoon...

Three days of rain in SoCal is like a disaster elsewhere. People here panic and aren't able to function. Many are ombrophobic. At least with these heavy rains, all the local mountain have finally reopened for hikers and mountain bikers. The mountains, trails, and all campgrounds have been off limits due to high fire danger for several weeks. I'm loading up my Mtb with camping gear and heading up the muddy trails for an overnighter. Nice....

Definitely ride in the rain. In Seattle winter it is dark and raining in the morning on the commute, and dark and raining in the evening on the commute. I'm sure our Swedish friends on the list have the same (or worse). Still wouldn't trade it for driving, though.

As for wet feet, I've been tempted to try some of those neoprene booties. Anyone had experience with those?

Well, here we have to find things to do if we aren't on the bike, because we get winter which lasts a bit longer than 3 days. So people ski or run or play hockey or go to the gym and do spinning classes. Turning to food and tv is not good. If we alldid that for a whole winter we'd all be blimps in april!

Oh the irony! I've been away for a few days, during which time we had our best rain in six months. Tomewin in the hinterland recorded over 200mm of rain inside a 24 hour period. I rode to work in it on Monday (for some reason it stopped just as I got on the bike on all the other days) and loved it! I think it did the bike some good too, it was making a few noises which all vanished just as soon as it got wet.

As far as I'm concerned, no, there isn't life without biking. However, life should not stop just because it's raining.

After day one I started to panic, wondering how long it would last.

Rode through day two ... only got a little bit wet. But a LOT muddy.

Day three I stayed put. Raining too hard, too many traffic accident reports. Took the LA equivalent of a snow day.

It's true that rain around here is like a hurricane in other places. I liken it to those snowstorms that shut down other cities. Rain shuts this one down. But considering it only rains for, what, </>14 days out of 365, we are pretty fortunate to be able to ride in near perfect conditions year round.

I had five days off of the bike for mostly the rain. Got back on today for a sunny but very cold ride. The street were pretty much littered with debris where I ride in the vicinity of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. That of course worries me because of probability of flats. During the last El Nino there were times that it was only 60 miles between flats. I now have the Continental Force/Attach Grand Prix tires on my bike so I can put them to the test. They boast of a puncture protection layer under the tread not to mention the 4/5 plies. I did brush two puncture weed seeds off the front tire.

Feeling much better, a ride after a 4 day hiatus, is a much needed activity...Put in about 45 miles..Plus a commute to work this afternoon....A part of the thing...Besides not liking cold , stinky feet- rainy rides are only for something approaching beater bikes.

Consequently, I'm feeling like crap. The rain has stopped, now we're covered in bushfire smoke (I thought the 200mm or rain we supposedly go on Monday was supposed to fix that?), it's disgustingly hot, and I'm sweating more sitting here typing this than I did on a century ride with over 2,600 metres of climbing three months ago.

I will now make my oft-repeated request. Those who don't want their rain are quite welcome to send it this way.
