Looking for a good truck bed rack...

that does NOT require me taking off the front wheel.

So far I have found the following:

http://www.rei.com/online/store/Prod...ry_rn=11846317

and

http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/me...Category_Code=

Though what I really would like is something that will allow me to place the bikes up higher and still be able to use the bed space underneath.

Hmmmm...time to start experimenting.

A long time ago I had "roll bars" in my truck bed, primarily for the purpose of hauling bikes. It worked better than any rack system I've seen around today. I could fit 4 bikes upright in the bed, and simply use bungees to secure them. I had pads on the roll bar so they wouldn't scratch. Unfortunately rollbars are no longer stylist in truck beds, so I guess you cant use this idea.

This one is great for trucks, easy to make too and cheap.
http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/ The instructions are posted on this web site, you will find them under the featured articles.

It took me like 30 mins to make and can fit 3 bikes as is
Best thing about it. Nothing to fiddle with at all, nothing to attach to you truck either, I just bungee the bike to the truck and everything is perfect.

Hmm anyone has any suggestions for a 2 door 94 yukon that I could put in the back, let me know. I don't mind taking off the front wheel.

oh yeah, its probibly obvious, but the rack just sits in the back of the bed

Turtlegirl...thanks for the link!

That may be what I resort too....though my "pie in the sky" desire is to actually be able to have the bikes up even with the top of the bed so that I can have the space underneath for gear and stuff.

This is $pendy, but secure and clean looking. You can mount a roof mount rain gutter bar system with a rain gutter bracket across the top of your bed, then use one of these bike racks:

Nice one TG. I made something similar for a static bike rack in the garage, never though of it for the truck. Guess I'll be visiting the hardware store tonight.

Thanks neuronbliss....my LBS actually recommended the same thing.

I know you asked for ideas to mount a bike with the front wheel intact, but others have mentioned it didn't matter. Thought I'd include a photo of my truck solution. Pretty cheap, just the bike tights and the 2x4.
