Bicycling safety
Any tips to ride in mix traffic? I'm new to the forum and would like to get ideas

When I ride in the road, I generally stick to the outside wheel rut. Unless I'm even further out into the lane. Time and time again, when I read about cyclists getting hit, they're invariably in a bike lane; so I avoid bike lanes. Ask this over in advocacy and you'll probably be told I don't know nuttin' though.

I have noticed you are in Malaysia. Traffic there can be rather heavy at times, however I think most are considerate of bicycles. As Machka has said above, "ride predictably" by that I believe she means don't dart and weave in and out of cars or make sudden movements while riding. Signal your turns in some way so cars have an idea of what your intentions are. I suggest you use a mirror as well. Welcome to Bike Forums, please come back and let us know how you find your riding is. Are you closer to Penang or KL, north or southern Malaysia? Enjoy

I tend to ride as if I'm on a low-powered motorcycle (in a way, I am.) Give yourself room in the lane rather than hugging the curb- the outer wheel track is a good basic position. Staying 'out of the way' as far over as possible can just cause motorists to try and squeeze past you rather than passing properly. The key is to be predictable and obey the rules of the road.

Thanks all, for the tips. Right here, as Northwestrider indicated, the traffic is rather heavy at peak times (office hours - to and fro), the weather is rather humid and hot (>30 C daytime), thus motorists tend to get 'overheated' easily. Not sure though if that contributes to road rage and endanger cyclists and others. Anyhow, I'll try to ride predictably. Thanks all.

I don't think you'll find much road rage in Malaysia. Here in Taiwan it is rare/non existent. I'd think it would be even less in your area.
