Light System?

I want a BRIGHT light that I can ride at night with....I also want it to be rechargable. I am not one for weak power. I carry surefire lights with me that produce 120 lumens just as a general flashlight, so I want something that's going to produce some light and has at minimal 4 hours or so of run time.

That would be overkill, I want something with 120-200 lumens and under 300 bucks preferably.

Look at the geek lighting thread?

slvoid 10-29-04 01:12 PM

Before you go crazy, just how often are you going to do a 4+ hour ride at night?
And how fast are you planning to go?
When you first start cycling, 2 hours at around 10-15 mph is what usually happens. Any 10 watt halogen would do.

PWRDbyTRD 10-29-04 01:39 PM

Actually 90% of my riding will be after sunset due to my work schedule and my lifestyle...I figure why spend 30 or 50 bucks on an OK one when I can just get a good one not have to worry about it? Anyways...That's about it. As far as 4 hour life, if I don't charge it one night I don't want it to be totally dead the next time I go out ;) Same thing as with my iPod and Laptop. anything that runs on battery I want to have extra life.

Gonna pick it up @ the LBS mon or tue...I don't want to get hit...I'd get hurt and mess up the civic pretty bad :(

Raiyn 10-30-04 01:08 AM

Probably total a f'ing Civic at your size brotha. Hell i'd do some serious damage as I am.

PWRDbyTRD 10-30-04 01:11 AM

that'd atleast make me feel good. My poor bike though :(

Raiyn 10-30-04 01:12 AM

Remember payback is a b**** He hit you therefore his car being totaled is payback enough - unless you want to beat some ricer butt

cryogenic 10-30-04 01:13 AM

Yeah... wonder if insurance companies will insure bikes against such things? They offer car insurance.. and a bike is transportation.

Bikes can be put on homeowner's / renter's insurance with a bit of a premium bump

cryogenic 10-30-04 01:21 AM

lame... I don't have homeowner's or renter's insurance since I live with roommates. Oh well... it was a thought.

If you're the primary it doesn't matter. Even if you're not you can go in as a group. Then again I "sold" my bikes to my girlfriend for $1 each and did up a "sales contract" for each of them with a "priority buy back" so I could have my bikes covered on her insurance without worring about break ups.

PWRDbyTRD 10-30-04 02:05 AM

so my parents insurance would cover my bike or would i need to my own

Do you live at Mom and Dad's? If so write up a "contract" and sell your bike to them for a dollar to make it legal with a "I get the option to buy the bike back for the same price before anyone else" clause. That's all I had to do with my girlfriend.

PWRDbyTRD 10-30-04 02:31 AM

Alright cool deal. Once I drop it on my mom I own a 1600 dollar bike, which she'll abso****kinglutely **** about I'll ask her. bahahah she can't understand spending money on anything much less 1600 on "some pedals"

Raiyn 10-30-04 02:53 AM

Like I said it's all I had to to with my girlfriend's policy

And you're about to buy a front headlight worth 1/4th of your bike.

Yep, why go cheap now??

PWRDbyTRD 10-30-04 06:15 PM

I dislike cheapness...I like getting something that will attempt to last. I could go through the list of things people's jaws basically drop or the fact that I would into work wearing around 1200 dollars...yeah some people say it's asinine, but at the same time everyone has their little deals...oh and that's not 1200 dollars in jewelry...well a 100 dollar watch...that's about it. As far as a 300 dollar lighting system, I want to be able to see where I'm going. I live where it is very dark, no street lights or anything....my neighbors just don't understand that concept for whatever reason. I also didn't want a light I had to replace the batteries in. My surefires cost enough there with the 3v lithium batteries. Anyways...how much have you all dumped into your bike? Oh BTW...I paid $792.63 shipped for my bike. I don't pay full price. Ever :)

Between the two I've got - probably around $3G

PWRDbyTRD 10-30-04 06:33 PM

Yeah...my point exactly! LoL. That's an insane amount of money some would say. Me though? If it's what you love there is no such thing as a price.

Are you guys still talking about lighting? If so, I'll chime in about the HID systems. They are definitely the brightest out there. Some people object to the bluish hue they put out, I don't. Some people object to the price, I don't. My L&M HID was an excellent use of $300, and I'd buy it again.

Read this from REI about the 2005 model:
# Full power mode puts out a jaw-dropping 675 lumens of clean, daylight balanced light with 5 hours of run time
# Low power mode offers 6 hours at a still incredible 550 lumens of even light output

Get em. What, $600 is NOTHING, in the grand scheme of your life....am I wrong? :D
