How the heck am I supposed to carry cable or U Lock on my bike?
 

I am small and have a small bike. The seat post isn't long enough for me to wrap a cable lock around it. The cross bar is to short to wrap a cable loc around it either. I can't see how to carry a U-Lock either. I want to go on rides and maybe stop for lunch or a snack. But I don't want to leave my bicycle unlocked. Any advce? Thanks, k

I carry my bike lock in the rear basket. I lost it once, but went back and retrieved it from 6 miles away.

They make brackets for mounting the U-locks. Some mount along side the water bottles some mount on the frame tubes. On most of my bikes I have ring locks with an optional chain that I carry in my panniers.

I use one for a flashlight, one for my lock. i also have one that came with a pump that runs the pump parallel to the tube. Pretty versatile. Could also add a rack and strap to that or in a bag.

could wear the lock as a belt? Have seen bike messengers do that.

Cable lock through the seat rails is my fix. If you have a rack the shackle lock will go through the side of the rack with the hoop on the outside of the struts, in parallel of the rack.

Here's a pic of how I used to have my bike set up. You can see the U-Lock hooked through the rails of my Brooks B17. My cable lock is stashed in my oversized seat bag, along with my combo tool, spare tube, and patch kit. I applied a short piece of black electrical tape to each seat stay so that the U-Lock wouldn't chip the paint on the stays.

Since then I added a rear rack and panniers, so all of that stuff is stashed in one of the pannier bags.

I usually go backpack. My current backpack has a back flap so lock is easily accessed without having to unzip anything.

Also rear rack or panniers. Also tucked into my pants. Also hanging off one of my brake hoods (must keep hand on it or else it will bounce off.)

Another vote for the ring type lock with optional chain. I have the Axa Defender on two of my bikes. But there is nothing wrong with the Abus version. One feature I like is that you cannot remove the key from the lock without locking it. Just remember that without using the chain, all you have done is immobilize the rear wheel.

I wrap my cable lock around the seat post very tightly.

with '2 fish' brand Velcro/Rubber Blocks they have a set to strap your U lock to your stem..
like fake aero bars..

sew your own u-lock holster, using 2 inch webing, there used to be a written out guide, but i lost it, cost lest than 5 bucks

I have a cable lock that is self-coiling. I frequently just slide the whole thing over my hand and wear it as sort of a bracelet while riding.

Hey, check out our TiGr titanium lock project on Kickstarter! It straps right along the top tube and weighs a quarter of what a Krypto does. It also gets both wheels and a parking meter in the lock.

Not sure anyone is likely to steal a 40-year old Schwinn Continental but I do carry a cable lock coiled around my Avenir bag and held with a Velcro strip.

I usually put mine on a belt loop or the seat rails. I stopped framing ulocks, as they tear up frames, decals, and stickers.

I have a couple of bikes with handlbar mounted bottle cages. They're great for holding u-locks also.

Most of the time U-locks come with clamp-on holders? I couldn't figure out Kryptonite's though. The OnGuard clamp is pretty simple to set up.

I go for the hipster-back pocket route on my bike without the clamp.

When I was a messenger a friend made me a belt with a loop to hold my u lock. Basically just a length of nylon webbing with a buckle and a loop. Worked like a charm, wish I hadn't lost it.

Rear rack and trunk bag. You can carry everything from spare tube, tools, food, extra water, money, and a cable or U lock.
