I dropped my helmet when I was locking the bike to a rack. Is the helmet still ok?

I dropped the helmet from no more than 30" off the pavement. Should I be concerned about getting a new one?

Helmets bounce. That's a minor impact, unless you see damage. Remember your helmet's meant to take a rather heavy body being attached to it and slapping into pavement at like 30mph.

I dropped my kid once, it was mostly alright. I'd say a minor fall for a helmet is no biggy.

They're made to take the weight of a head falling from ~5'6" onto the crown, nothing more.

Helmets can take that kind of everyday abuse up to a point. I had one old helmet that had been dropped lots of times. One day it developed a hairline crack and fell apart.

You call your kid "it?"

Technically the only way to know for sure is to have it inspected by the factory. But it is probably OK. If it is more than a few years old and you ride a lot then it is time to replace it anyway. You can get a decent helmet for $30 or so. Is your peace of mind and maybe noggin worth $30?

EChing, Motorcycle rider? Generally a bicycle helmet can take such a fall without any damage simply because they're so lightweight.

You didn't mention if your head was still in the helmet when you dropped it.?

If your head was in it then you better get it replaced.

Wrong pronoun? When people ask me, I reply that I don't own any children...apparently that is an incorrect verb choice. :)

But back to the OP, I'm going to guess that you're OK. If it were a motorcycle helmet, I'd be concerned.

If the helmet is less than brand new I'd say...."If in doubt..throw it out"......then move on with a known safe helmet.

Unless you were in the bike when you dropped it, it will be ok. Helmets are made for serious impacts whilst cushioning a human's body weight. Just dropping it on the garage floor will not hurt it.

Not a web forum sight unseen guess-able thing, have the shop that sold it,
(the helmet, not the child), have an inspection look.
