Why don't they sell new bikes with pedals?

Is this an online only thing? I've been telling people about this new bike I want to buy, but then I say it doesn't come with pedals and they laugh. I sort of don't understand it myself, why wouldn't they come with?

Because serious riders generally have a favorite pedal that they'll install before riding the bike the first time. It makes no sense to include throwaway pedals - although sometimes that's exactly what's done.

The majority of bicycles are sold with pedals included.
Some bikes are sold without pedals because many cyclists wish to use a particular style or model of pedal. For instance, plain cage pedals would be useless for someone who only uses clipless pedals. I've removed pedals from the last 4 bikes that I bought. (And replaced them with other SPD pedals.)
When people laugh, just tell them you don't need no stinkin' pedals. Or, tell them that you want to put on some pedals that are really cool.

I wouldn't want to buy a bicycle with pedals. I have a particular type of pedal I like, and I don't need yet another pair of cheap platform pedals. Bicycles could come without saddles too as far as I'm concerned ... unless the saddle in question is a Brooks.
