We are bad people?

I take my Mom to the hair dresser on Wed's. Yesterday there was
a lady there that told me she thinks a lot of the older men riding
bike are child molesters looking for victims.

How do people get these ideas? Fact is, real facts BTW, the vast
majority of this type person drive vans.

Think about grabbing a fifty, sixty pound struggling kid and riding off
on your bike??

Opinions?

Well.... are you?

Bikes are toys???

Hmmm...never heard this one. It's always DUI's on bike...

Between this and the "touring with a ferret" thread in the touring forums, it's been a weird time here at BF recently. :)

That's funny. I have a similar, unjustified prejudice about ALL women of a certain age in hairdressers being cackling old hens who form opinions based on the sensationalized $#it on TV because their lives contain nothing interesting to talk about.

If by child she means women younger than her (~25 to 35) then absolutely.;)

Why take a 40 when you can have two 20s. :D

calamarichris 05-05-11 11:24 AM

No, I got a coupon for a haircut at my Ma's salon as a birthday present and I had to sit & wait and listen to the clucking.
Between that and flipping through a Cosmopolitan magazine, it was an unflattering view of the dark underbelly of our species.

I am a good person. However, I can't speak for any of you reprobates.

Do you have a source for that fact?

It's common knowledge.

It's known to have happened at least once, therefore it must be universal truth.

Watch the evening news! Ask any police officer! A couple years ago we had
three in less that two months and they shared one fact, they all drove older
full size vans. All were windowless commercial type vans.

That's the kind of answer the lady at the hairdresser's would probably give.

I know it happens, here in the UK there was a push for a "Sarah's Law" which would be much like your "Megan's Law" after a young girl (I think she was about 6) was abducted by a guy with a van much like has been described.

It's far from clear how a guy on a bike could successfully take a child, even if the child was 100% complicit in the proceeding. Throw in a bit of resistance and it's pretty obvious it's an impossible feat.

JacktheFlash 05-06-11 05:22 AM

The opinions and factoids people spout about never ceases to amaze me. Maybe the woman harbors ill will to older bike riders? Who knows and who cares..

Ah, the old Logic and Reason gambit. That may win some arguments but your up against baying mob mentality stirred up by a tabloid newspaper selling frenzy.
The tabloid editors love a Good Murder, ie a young, pretty, white girl and wont let mere Logic and Reason get between their profit margin and the paying punters.

When I was growing up we had an older guy who would ride around with a rabbit in his front basket. He would encourage the kids to pet his bunny. He gave us the creeps.

ScottStr 05-06-11 08:43 AM

I'm wanting to put together a series of spoof videos showing bicyclists committing crimes. My first idea is to have 4 guys on bike pull an ATM out of a convenience store with their bikes. Another one is hookers on bikes. Now I'll have to do one with a molester offering candy to a little girl. She takes the candy and he realizes he hadn't thought things through very well and gives up and rides off.

That's what I think too. And trying to escape blame by deflecting it onto another class of individuals only worsens the problem.

Or, she takes the candy, kicks his ass and steals his bike!

I think everyone is missing the point.

The kids will willingly, no eagerly follow an old fart on a bike, sort of like the pied piper. Not just a kid, but all the kids in the area will manage to find a bike and follow, like little ducklings behind one of us in full kit.

The old crone who was cackling about us got one thing right, old guys on bikes are a lot more fun that cackling old crones so kids will gladly desert her for old guys like us!
