Applying to Colleges, Cycling a factor

Its an important factor for me. I love biking, and I need to find an institution with beautiful conditions for biking in and around campus. I'm applying to many California schools already, so I could use some advice outside CA.

Any of you cyclists in a club or team at school that could help me out with some info please!

What kind of info are you looking for?

It would help to if you gave some idea about your cycling level. I won't be much ehlp anyway as yuo seem to not need any advice about California. But I can promise you there are some shcools in Colorado that have beautiful cycling routes for an experienced cyclist who enjoys climbs. I'd bet at least a couple of these do not have very many routes that a non-climber would enjoy.

Have you even looked at how much out of state tuition will cost? CU in Boulder has some sweet cycling. School of Mines in Golden, CO would be good once the Black Hawk ban is fixed (assuming you are looking at a science major).

Monroe County and the surrounding counties are spectacularly great for cycling. The Hilly Hundred is headquartered in Ellettsville, to the West of Bloomington.

Here is a vote for The University of Arizona.

The cycling in Tucson is fantastic, can be done year round, and the community is very aware and supportive of it. There are a ton of clubs and teams in the area and many pros come to train here during the winter. We also have Mount Lemmon which you can easily bike to from anywhere in town and then climb 6k ft in about 25 miles.

Oh and the school is pretty awesome too. Tuition isn't as burdensome as many institutions (Out of state tuition is usually less than in state tuition for the California schools), there is a very good business school (my wife's degree), a good Engineering school (my degree), as well as many others which I'm less familiar with.

Good luck with your search.

Well, here's the list of top Bicycle Friendly Universities.

As a Gaucho alum, I have to recommend UC Santa Barbara.

You guys are awesome, thank you for the help! Sorry I wasn't detailed in my post. I'm a recent graduate at Cal State Long Beach, which, on the BFU (bike friendly univiersities)(thanks Artkansas!)) list, ranks highest on the silver category. I love commuting, social/fast group rides, climbs, and biking for the hell of it. I heart cycling. Having a campus that's bike friendly is icing on the cake, and could be a deciding factor on the campuses I chose to apply to for my doctorate in physical therapy. Probably should have mentioned this earlier, as it limits my selection, but its interesting to read about your experiences.

Anyhoo, I've lived in California my whole life, and though I'll apply to a handful of PT programs locally, I'd like to broaden my selection.

I'm not trying to delve into fees, tuition, grades, and requirements. I'm simply looking for campuses that cater to your avid cyclist, and hopefully have enjoyable surroundings to cruise on

edit: Bike friendly campuses and corresponding surroundings will actually play a huge factor in my decision to apply to that program. Cycling has been a life changer and saver for me. It is one of the main reasons why I want to become a physical therapist. Ok thats enough!

I did a quick check on Arkansas. University of Central Arkansas has a degree for you. Conway, AR, where it is is pretty nice for bicycling but doesn't have bicycle friendly status yet.

Bikes: Cannondale CAAD8 (hot roddin') and a Scott SUB40 (commuter/tow-truck)

Kansas State University. Small town atmosphere, low speed limits near the campus, and located in the Flint Hills surrounded by a bunch of lightly travelled blacktop.

It's been 12 years since I've been back to Manhattan, KS but assume it still looks pretty much the same!

Bicycling magazine has a story in this month's issue where a student chose University of Vermont because of their cycling club. DPT is on their list of majors.

I commute through University of Rochester's (NY) River Campus daily. I'm pretty sure URMC can get you doctored up in anything you choose.

Bikes are everywhere on campus. They have a cycling club that competes in all the local races, and on the collegiate circuit. The campus is on a MUP, and we also have three bike clubs in town (road racing, road social, and MTB). R-town is a half-century from the heart of NY's Finger Lakes Wine Country, which is reminiscent of the terrain in NorCal.

Don't let out climate frighten you off. I've been car-free since 1999, and ride every workday, straight through the winter. We even have a winter-only weekly group ride, which conveniently, rides a awful lot around the UR River Campus.

University of Missouri might be worth researching. I know almost nothing of the school, but Columbia, MO has a lot of cycling infrastructure.
