your thoughts on my fit...

when I bought my bike in Nov, it came with a fit. They gave me a longer stem (110) but when I ride, I find myself inadvertently shifting my hands back to the bars behind the hoods. Should I get a shorter stem or could this be related to another adjustment? I otherwise feel great on my bike... but when I ride on the hoods, I feel a little stretched out.

Does anything hurts? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Besides, you are supposed to be stretched out, that's why they are way up there ;) The fact that you have to reach for them is what lowers your position, thus cutting back on drag.

But then again it is your bike. If you want them closer, go for it.

..talk to someone with several years working in a bike shop about your bike fit,
they can see you on the Bike.

maybe they ride the kind of events and style you do.

Stems are easy to change. Look around online for some closeout pricing. Buy a few stems -- say one each of a 100mm and a 90mm, and maybe even an 80mm. Swap them in. Ride. See how you feel.

I agree with Jonathan. Stems are (or can be) cheap. It's worth a few bucks to answer the question.

It could also be height issue.

Two of my bikes have old-school threaded steerers. I use quill to threadless adapters on them. I find that in the spring, I feel better with them raised about centimeter, otherwise my grip creeps back and up the ramps. As the season goes along and my flexibility returns, I lower them again.

I recently found this little app which graphically compares the bar location of any two given stems. Bookmark it.

Another way to change height and reach to the hoods, is with different bars. Road Bike Drop Bar Geometry is a Flash app that shows how the different shapes, drops and reaches of selected bars change the position of the hoods. Bookmark that one too.

thanks for the input everybody.

I think I am going to ask them to revisit my fit when I go in for my 1st tune up (yet to be scheduled) They promised free adjustments until I was 100% happy with the way the bike felt. I was going to buy a few new stems and then I remembered that so it doesn't seem worth it for me to spend much money with a guess and test stem swaps.

Keep in mind that you will be sacrificing a tad of efficiency for a tad of comfort. If this is what you may be aiming for then that's fine.
