I generally get chased by at least one dog once a day. I've only been bitten once in my life, however. I promptly kicked it squarely in the nose.

Ok this article may be a little out of hand but I think there are some good suggestions in it. I was quite speechless at the end.

quite an amusing article... first it seemed like he was writing a nice article about how to avoid a dog.. then he goes into "bash its head in" mode.

Yea I agree about the article. Its a good read and has plenty of valid points but I think the author went a little overboard in some points in it. Possible he could have been less violent and graphic about it... I love dogs but I think if one were to attack me I dont think I would hessitate to

Yell, "GET OFF THE COUCH!" and if that doesn't work then "STOP!" Worked twice for me, but those dogs were small, though I guess that doesn't matter if they get under the front wheel. One of them stopped, confused probably. The other veered away until he wasn't a danger -- probably confused as well.
I haven't had much of a problem with dogs, but I live in a relatively urban area, so I guess the dogs around here must be used to cyclists.
I read somewhere that chasing things is either bred into them or in their genes, so simply stopping might work, but I don't think I'd want to test that out on a larger dog -- then again since each situation is different, who knows.
..but, anyway, there are two things that worked for me.
Joe.

Same problem in my rural area as well. Nothing gets that heart rate up faster than a big dog at each foot. I just ordered from this outfit: https://www.peppersprayinc.com/animalrepellers.htm web ad even mentions for cyclists with a velcro bike attachment.

I wonder what places locally would carry good pepper spray that would stop dogs dead in their tracks... army surplus?

Forget the "dog repellent" sprays and ultrasonic noise makers. The ultrasonic units are bogus, and the "dog repellent" sprays don't contain enough pepper for encounters with two-legged varmints.
I always head out the door with standard, "cop strength" pepper spray in my right jersey pocket. It works incredibly well on dogs - stops them in their tracks nearly every time, and doesn't seem to cause them any undue pain. It's also nice knowing it's there in case of a road rage encounter (FWIW - I've never had to use it on a human). Depending on where you live, you can purchase pepper spray at gun stores, hardware stores, lock shops, and via the web.
See https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/journ...20040118184701 for a lot of good info on dealing with dogs.

I kinda figured pepper spray would work best in such a case... I was just curious as to where such a product could be purchased locally. I wonder if my LBS carries it... might have to ask them tomorrow when I go.

I used to be a postman in the uk, the thing that works best is regular sprinkle pepper form a pepper shaker.
Works ever time, does not harm the dog and is 100% legal.
I once had a customer complain I kicked his dog, the dog was attached to my knee at the time.
So we stopped delivering mail to him.

interesting about the actual pepper being usable... although I'd find that rather odd to be carrying around a container of black pepper from the supermarket.

Go to any uniform shop that does business with cops, emt's, etc. They'll have good pepper spray.
