I dislike clipless pedals on any city bike since I feel they are unsafe.

You would think...perhaps I'm wrong, that cardboard would be cheaper thus the helmet should cost less then a standard helmet? either way by getting away from Styrofoam your not using as much oil, and if you use recycled cardboard then your not cutting trees either. Now what they should do is make the plastic cover out of bamboo which is very renewable but that would drive prices up.

now that Styrene plastics have shown carcinogenic side effects, may be a plus..
that is if the corrugated cardboard making glues are free of formaldehyde ,
many are not.

That's only a problem if you eat it, since I doubt you will be eating helmets anytime in the near future I doubt that will be of any concern.

You may be on to something. If you could keep the popcorn bound to each other that could protect your head. And as a side benefit if you break down on the road and are stranded for a day you then could eat your helmet and not worry about carcinogenic side effects from eating styrofoam. Then you could offer replacement popcorn inserts in case you do eat it.

That would work. Put popcorn in a large ziploc bag and duct tape it to your head. Simple and cheap protection.

Really, take away all the hype, what does this tell you about the safety potential of that helmet you're wearing right now? Just saying, this thing couldn't replace a real safety helmet, like a football or hockey helmet, motorcycle helmet, kyaking helmet, etc. Bicycle helmet tests are so rediculous that cardboard can pass. Pathetic, really.

I do agree that the current tests for cycling helmets leave a lot to be desired.
However the cardboard is not a bad idea and probably performs better in many cases than the current styrofoam stuff.
Years ago I was part of a car building project, we built 5mph bumpers out of plywood and empty beer cans, worked great and met the requirements.
