Knox u-lock and others - help
Hi, I have a Knox u-lock with cable. Web image says its from a defender series. I recently lost the lock part of the u-lock, the tumbler lock (Still have the long bracket).
I do not have much idea about locks except that an u-lock is better. I cant find an official site for Knox bike locks to see if I can get the missing part. Anybody has an idea about this or where I can get the tumbler lock portion? What other locks do you recommend to change to? I can put the cable that attaches to the u-lock in any. Also, looking for less that $20. Thank you!:) |
Cheers and welcome to Bike Forums.
I haven't heard of the Knox brand, so cannot help you there anymore than point to Google (which I assume you have tried already). In the sub USD20 category it's going to be slim pickings. But generally speaking, you have several options. You can buy a new padlock/U-lock for the cable you already have. I would not buy a combination lock. Established brands include Kryptonite, Abus and Abloy (in padlocks) but I doubt any of them have much anything available at your price point. Would a permanently attached rear wheel lock do the trick? Those are not terribly expensive, but their security is not up to a decent (expensive) U-lock/padlock level. --J |

I would look into the other ones, probably a u-lock instead of padlock. It sounds safer. Thank you! |
Keeping your budget in mind, your options for Ulocks that I would trust start with this guy http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_d...34374302889381 at $25.
My bro. in law uses it daily and has never complained about it and it sure does feel beefy. You may also want to try a Mini-U at $25 http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_d...34374302889381 + a chain you buy from a hardware store if you don't go for the name brand stuff. |

I am willing to pay $25 for something worth it. I only found the Magnum in the same site that you posted, but I got this other forum debate on locks. http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in...p/t-70625.html Seems at the end, if somebody wants to really steal your bike they will. I have a Giant Boulder that I actually pay $50 in great shape, so I am in mid-ground on security. Still I would be bummed if stolen. I paid $25 a couple of years ago for my knox u-lock with the cable (which can use in any u-lock). I wish I could just get the replacement part. However, I can get the same one for $15 http://www.amazon.com/Knox-Defender-...=1UKSW7QBO4LEA But I think not worth risking it now knowing all the options Thank you! |
Over $20, but 'better' is something that costs more,
It's an Axa Defender + one of these, here: http://axabasta.intermix5.nl/cat/fro...3=&item_id=639 |
