Large Frame-Medium Rider

I am riding a 58cm road frame, but I am only 5'10". About 1" of the seat-post is showing. Is there anything, inherently wrong with this? The only problem I have encountered is with stand-over height: I did injure myself once, when I slipped on the pedal when a streetlight turned green.
I think I should be riding a 54cm frame, and i have planned to buy one, but I'd like to know if using an over-sized frame is sub-optimal, even if the seat and bar height feel fine.

I guess it depends on the frame and the rider? I'm about 5'10" and also ride 58cm (seat-tube) frames, but have way more than an inch of seatpost "showing". More like a fist and a half of seat post to be "exact" -- these are non-sloping top-tube frames. Maybe your frame has a 58cm top-tube and more like a 60+cm seat tube?

I am short and ride a 51cm frame with a sloping top tube. I still do not have any Standover clearance.

Is your saddle up high enough or are you still riding within the "Safety" zone? Saddle height and although more complicated- You should for better pedalling efficiency ride with your legs almost fully extended. This means with the knee just slightly bent with the crank arm at its lowest point. I ride with the saddle at this point and cannot touch the ground with my feet when in the saddle.

I ride a 51/54cm frame and is way below your size but 58 may be a fraction too large- but I doubt it. I also ride a mates bike that is 56cm and other than saddle adjustment- It does fit me. Attachment is of the same bike. With the Blue tyres it is set up for a 6ft rider and with the red tyres for me. I am 5'6" and 30" inseam

You'll eventually either pound them to mush or just get a smaller frame.

I'm 6'1" and ride a 58cm bike(seat tube). I'd say you are a size or two too big, yeah. You might be more like a 56.

I used to ride frames conmsidered way too large for me. I'm 6'1" and rode 63 CM frames. Never had a problem. Thought I'd try out the smaller stuff. Bad idea. I'm far more comfortable on the larger frame and the next bike will be a 61-63CM.

Just my experience YMMV.

Im about the same height , my 58 has a rather short. older period
campag seat post. showing about 2 inches.. 3 fingers

Bikes were commonly sized much larger in the past..
It has an Upright riding position now,
and a cargo rack on the front

Chi,
My seat post, from the center of my bottom bracket to the top of the seatpost is 23.25, which is equal to 59 cm. I have a 30" inseam on my leg.

Stap,
I just measured myself and I am 5.66 feet, not 5'10" as I noted (hoped?) That's about 5'8", I guess. This must be the reason why I have only one inch of my seatpost showing.
