Water bottle

The skinny: I was sitting on a park bench taking a water break the other day. Stupidly, I rode off with the bottle still on the bench.

Usually I go to my local bike shop but they were closed so I went to Dicks Sporting Goods. After 10 minutes of wandering around, I didn't find it in the biking section. I ask an associate and he said they do not carry them.

Luckily I live near a shopping mall mecca and went to Sports Authority. The guy there tells me "why buy a water bottle when you can just pop in a Poland Spring and bend your wire cage so it won't pop out." Oh, and they also don't sell water bottles there apparently.

So that got me wondering, what do most of you drink from? A reusable bottle or a disposable?

reusable

reusable

Bottled water has far more contaminants in it than most municipal waters. Then there is the landfill factor.

Aside from that, I use a regular water bottle (reusable) because I can drink from it one-handed while riding.

reusable stainless steel. I try to avoid aluminum/plastic liner ones, and plastic bottles altogether.

HDPE (high density polyethylene) is pretty safe. That's another thing about bottled water. It often comes in PET bottles, which will leach things into the water.

Just go to Walmart/Target -- they have bottles.

Rock31 08-16-11 06:55 AM

I carry 3 of the 32oz green Gatorade bottles with me, got em at Dicks for $4 each in the football section.

Camelbak Podium Big Chill, I love the jet valve and it looks good too.

Reusable.

But having done something similar I went to a convenience store and bought a 24oz (IIRC) bottle of Gatorade with the twist to drink cap. I ended up refilling it a few times before disposal.

Reusable and tap water.

UberGeek 08-16-11 09:17 AM

Reusables with tap water.

Speaking of which, most department stores carry that sort of thing: http://www.target.com/s?keywords=wat...bx_1_1&x=0&y=0

I'm all for going to your LBS, and sporting goods stores, but in this case, just go to the nearest box store :)

fietsbob 08-16-11 09:17 AM

Municipal tap water is certainly tested more often,
than corporate bottled stuff..

Since stainless is less forgiving and won't crush to get into a bottle holder (I have a Camelbak Groove Stainless, with built-in filter for easy refilling at any muni water tap), do you use a somewhat flexible frame bottle holder?

____asdfghjkl 08-16-11 11:00 AM

camelbak podium bottle.

nathan.johnson 08-16-11 06:55 PM

reusable bottle from whichever lbs gives them to me for free :)

ThermionicScott 08-16-11 08:21 PM

20oz pop bottles will generally stay put if wedged in upside-down.

Reusable, INSULATED water bottle...................from..............................DICK'S :). They have them in our store. They were near the check out. Dick's bike department is quite pathetic. So is their fly fishing department(shelf).
The bike department hangs their riding jerseys up about 8 feet high so you can't get to them. Huh?
I NEVER buy bottled water. That is one of the dumbest fads I have ever seen( in the USA). Now, in Mexico I buy them quite frequently ;)

Best $10 I've spent in a long time.

^ Amazon has Polars for $8. :)

DX-MAN 08-17-11 02:07 PM

I use the 20oz. Gatorade sport bottles (twist top), get about 2-3 months of use out of them. Cost $1, and they come full of Gatorade. Fit the bottle cage just fine.
