Riding can be mentally taxing

I just got back from a 2.5 hour ride, where it was overcast and misty for the first half, and then light rain the second half. As soon as I got back, before I even walked in the door, I felt this big reliefe, like all of a sudden it was quiet in my head (mmm that sounds weird). But then I realized how much concentration it took me to get around in the rain.

You ever think about that? I was focusing like a laser beam on all the cars around me, but I could barely see with the rain on the glasses (and it was getting to be dusk - I hadn't brought my light ). And all I heard was the sound of tires running on wet roads. It was like sensory deprivation.

Maybe it's just that traffic was worse for the holiday. But don't you focus a lot on where the cars are, who's going to pass you and when, can you make the light or not, etc etc?

heck yeah...not so much on a bike, but when i ride my motorcycle it's exhausting cuz i'm constantly having to pay attention to make sure some moronic soccer mom in a mini-van talking on a cellphone and drinking a latte' doesn't run my arse over. i get more tired after an hour on the motorcycle than 3 hours on my bicycle.

I notice that sometimes too. You're so worried about not getting hit by the drivers that you aren't paying attention to how much fun you're having and when you get home it's a load off your mind when you don't have to focus so hard on the drivers around you. Wow that was a long sentence.

I also notice it when I'm on roads where theres hardly any people and I'm just pedalling along. lalalalalala.... there went 3 hours, now where the heck am I? You're brain just turns to mush.

I get that when I dh or ride the shore (obviously mountain biking) the intensity of concentration is just awesome. My first time riding a north shore trail and I left with a headache...
