My boyfriend and I have been together for over three years, and we've just decided to start trying for a baby. He loves biking. He had been using his bike as his primary mode of transportation until last fall/winter when he developed problems with his knees from the excessive biking; then he bought a car and primarily uses that now. However, he just got a job that's very close to where he's living right now, and he's considering using his bike to save on gas. My concern is that this might inhibit our chances of conceiving.

When I first met him in June of 2008, he hadn't been doing a lot of biking. He started biking a lot in order to come see me (about 8 miles away). The first month we were together, he said he would experience numbness and tingling in his genital area after biking, so he immediately got a better bike seat. It's a lot wider and cushiony, and it dips in the middle (I guess to cradle the balls). He says he hasn't had the numbness/tingling since getting that seat years ago and that he doesn't even sit on his balls or anything. Anyway, is there any chance that biking affects fertility? He definitely has no erection problems, but we've never tested his sperm count. Any help is appreciated!

Unless he hits himself repeatedly in the male reproductive area to get a speed boost or some other reason, I couldn't see this been a issue.

I mean think about it most men I know had bikes as children wouldn't that also constitute infertility. Neither will clothing that keeps his "stuff" close to his body. It is true it can lower it a small amount due to heat, but most will be fixed in a day or too no permanent damage.

Now if he is running with no support that is a difference story that can cause a lot of damage.

The dip in the middle of the seat is to relieve pressure on the prostate & that's a good thing, they would have to be some mighty small balls, & as a reproductive aid no. Like zeerith said excessive heat can lower sperm counts. I had a friend that was trying to have a baby but couldn't & they were trying for a year I said, if you go surfing with me (this was winter) for two weeks I guarantee she will get pregnant & like clockwork 2 weeks later she was pregnant. they dont just hang outside the body for y'all to play with, balls like to be cool.

Cannot 'conceive' (pun intended) where bike riding will inhibit conception unless either he or you have other issues.
Am 78 years old and over 300,000 miles of cycling so far. Have 3 kids.

I see no problems about conceiving with his biking habit unless you are actually trying to have sex while he is riding the bike, that may cause an issue. I have been riding for a number of years and have two boys. No problems here.

The larger more "cushiony" seat, that might hurt more than help.

If your bf's sit bones are on the seat and the seat is the right size and adjusted correctly he should not need anything to "cradle his balls" or anything else other than maybe a jock strap. Good grief.

So you and the bf are having a baby but don't have enough commitment to the baby or yourselves to get married? I think that is more of a problem that your bfs "balls" and bike seat.

Sounds like he's having more problems with his knees than his testes. (And either issue can be alleviated with a proper bike fit.) Go forth and multiply.

Of all the things that can cause problems conceiving (age, weight, smoking, toxins, past trauma, genetic issues, anatomy malformations, excessive testicular temperatures, polycystic ovary syndrome etc) I'd say cycling is way down on the list. Give it several months of trying then go see a reproductive endocrinologist if not successful. The internet is a terrible place to go looking for this kind of advice - anyone can type anything and I've seen some pretty wacky advice.

There was a study that said keeping a cellphone in your pocket reduces sperm guality. I'd be more worried about that than biking(if I did not FULLY intend to remain child free).
