A lot of talk about merino wool these days for cycling clothing makes me think of possibly trying to make my own clothing. I'm not a fan of the hipster knickers and such that a lot of the fixie crowd wears and that unfortunately is where a lot of the natural fiber clothing is going - ie. to make garments that don't necessarily look like something cycling specific. Personally, I prefer cycling specific clothing because I think the fit of bike shorts and tights and jerseys maximizes the wicking of sweat and helps cut down on wind resistance. I dabble a bit in The Society for Creative Anachronism and as such have a bit of experience sewing things like hosen, which are essentially the medieval version of lycra tights, only made from wool. I'm willing to bet there would be some market for making things like tights using fabrics like merino wool. One major advantage I think would be cycling clothing made from natural fibers like wool or linen are likely to stink less than garments made from fabrics like polyester. Even if you slather on deodorant, one day of sweating in a typical jersey will give it that nasty sweat b.o. funk. Of course there are jerseys currently being made from wool but they're uber-expensive. Now you've got ME thinking about crafty cycling related stuff. I do some leatherworking as well and had considered making some all leather panniers.

The pic on the left has been one of my more useful pictures, and it helped me reverse engineer on of my favorite bags.
