What does this mean, and is it worth buying?

Hi, everyone. I started cycling in August, and have been using a friend's spare road bike up until now. I've been looking for a decent bike to buy so I can stop bothering him, and I saw this:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/bik/2660432154.html

I'm not a bike person, and I have no idea what a chain tensioner is, how much it would cost to fix it, and what signs of damage I should look for if I decide to meet the guy.

Can anyone give me any advice as to what I should do regarding the bike?

PS: Sorry if this is in the wrong forum!

My advice, is to always buy carbon fiber new. Never take any chances!

That is unless you're rich. If you're rich, then other guy selling the bike most probably needs your money more than you do!

Therefore, if the bike turns out to be good, you've made yet another wise investment. If the bike turns out to be a farce, then you've helped a less fortunate person.

I think the owner meant derailer, looks like the chain
and hanger are gone too. Probably was in a bad crash.
I would pass up on it. If you want to save money and
learn about bikes hands on at the same time join a
local bike cooperative:

And learn about sizing so you get a bike that fits. Just like clothes, a bit too big or small is not gonna work well.

"The bike is in ok condition but does need a little work"
The seller doesn't even know what a derailleur is, apparently, so how can you trust that the bike is in 'ok condition.'? Aside from the 'chain tensioner' and derailleur hanger both missing.
Risky business.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll pass on this one. I'm just so anxious to get a nice bike that isn't a friend's.

Oh well. I don't mind waiting.

I think if you had somebody with you that knew exactly what they were looking at and what for, this thing could be a steal.

New derailleur hanger = $15
New rear derailleur (depending on what you want to buy) = $30-$100
New chain = $12-$30
...potentially on a full carbon bike for under $400

Like as another poster said, this thing could have been in a wreck, so somebody has to know exactly what to be looking for and how to check for damage. If you make an uneducated decision and the thing is damaged, carbon repair ranges anywhere from $100-$400, depending on its severity (per repair location).

If it were me and I was looking for that kind of bike, I would at least go and take a look. It could be terrible or it could be a home run.
