Got the hots to get a MTB. Question about discounts on last year's models.

With winter coming on, I want to get a mountain bike and check out some of the many trails here. My LBSs are mostly Trek dealers and I have a Trek hybrid, so I'll probably stick with them. I called the dealer today to see if there were any deals on 2011s. He found one model that had a hundred or so in stock in my size, but it's a higher end bike and the cheaper ones I would consider had no 2011 stock. So, my question is how does Trek deal with getting rid of last year's models? He quoted me a price not quite 20% off list. As time goes by will the price get lower? With so many in stock it seems at some point they'd have a fire sale I'd love to get one at a substantial discount depending on how the game works. Any insight would be appreciated.

The dealer called Trek and asked what 2011 mountain bike models in the OP's size were available at a good discount. Trek said that the only model they had in sufficient quantity to offer at a significant discount was whatever high-end model the dealer told the OP about.

I only have experience with one store, which happens to be a manufacturer's outlet store, and all previous year models are 25% off regardless if it's Jan or or November. Anything older than the previous year is 25% to 40% off.

Not sure how it works with Trek, but but if you are looking for a fire sale, you might be waiting until Jan 2013. Somehow I doubt they would have any left.

Then again, that shop I visited this week had a crap ton of one 2010 model hybrid in 19" even. These currently go for 25% off, but come Jan, they could go down some more.

They had a few 2009 bikes which were pretty sweet for the discounted price too. Think full LX (including hubs)/Deore crank, Avid 7 brakes, Mavic rims, for way under $1k.

Jan. 2012 I assume you mean? I can certainly hang until then, but I was hoping something special would happen in time for Christmas I've been watching Craigslist for a couple of months and NOTHING has surfaced in my size and quality that I'm looking for. What little there is seems to either be junk or super high end stuff.

No, I mean 2013. But that's based on what I've seen at that outlet store. But then again Trek might do things different since they are a lot bigger.

That store I visited currently has all 2010s 25% off. Anything 2009 and older was up to 40% off. The 2011s were still selling for normal price.
