Ok,I picked up a Miyata 914 and it has pedals intended for a special shoe. My question is what shoes? what cleats? are there any economical options?, I am just barely getting by ,So I can't just happily order something. what to look for on ebay etc.? Is there any way to convert normal cycling shoe?( I have a pair) the groupo is all Shimano 600 and the pedals say Shimano, they have a grey finish

Pictures would help. Over the years, Shimano has used at least three different, mutually incompatible clipless cleat designs.

These use a "Look" style cleat and compatible shoe. If there were a bike co-op near you, I would be shopping for usable shoes- converting existing shoes is possible, but problematical. (What kind of "normal" cycling shoes do you have? Can you take a picture of the sole and post it?)

I agree with Taga- you may be better off removing them and installing inexpensive platform pedals.

Get the shoes :) Once you clipless, you will never go back :)
