I haven't but after that treatise, the sheila's getting one tonight. One minor alteration Mike, it will be me running my hands up and down her legs :D :D :D heheheh shaving, who would have thought it would bring a smile to your dial.

Nicodemus 03-10-05 08:23 AM

Don't shave, wax. It leaves the skin much smoother, and lasts longer.

Hum interesting twist, never thought of that.

She doesn't cycle.

To hell with it where's that razor.

I believe you make the choice according to your commitment and passion to cycling. Me personally I am very passionate about cycling...I have seven bicycles, two high end-high performance-high priced race machines, one mountain bike the rest are vintage bikes that are hanging from my ceiling as funtional art. I have over 100 books on bicycles, Ironman, running, nutrition, training. I have taken personally over 200 photos of "bicycles" and have purchased many others. and I have over 50 bicycle framed art on my apartment walls...I have 53 bicycle related stickers on the back of my 1993 Ford Explorer...
I collect just about anything bicycle...bicycle licence plates, celeberties photos on bicycles, little bicycle figirines, I even created two bicycles out of wire, washers, and fine rope chain....there is more... but you get the idea that I am a bicycle maniac...therfore I choose to shave my legs because the pros do it and it makes your leg muscles come out! :)

Bigmikepowell 03-11-05 01:47 PM

At last an honest answer. Top logic.

bold mine

I can respect that, at least you're honest.

But this "Well it helps road rash" is just silly. 1) How often are you falling/crashing that you would shave your legs anticipating it???? 2) does that bandage hurt that much when you pull it off your "owwie"???

The masseuse excuse is even sillier. Unless you're a pro cyclist you probably shave your legs more often than you get massages. Why not just shave legs before massage then?

Why not shave your leg aroung the "road rash" before you bandage.

You guys are either a) full of bs, making up excuses to conform, 2) falling off your bike too often, perhaps get into something you're good at -because you shouldn't be falling off your bike so often.

This whole thing is just plain silly. Men don't shave their legs. Simple as that.

FXjohn 03-13-05 09:19 AM

Ziggarut-

The whole thing is narcissism, pure and simple.
Why they think they need an excuse just tells me that they are kind of ashamed of it.

cyclezealot 03-13-05 09:53 AM

This topic does not effect me personally...Not an issue with me, other than I am a free thinker, and what others generally do with their bodies is none of my business.
But, an issue that comes to mind....Yes, I do not relate to leg shaving.. Maybe seems a little unusual, but thats ok...'
But, listen to young pre-generation xers'. Modern women seem to like shaven men. The more they shave , in some elements in the younger culture, the more popular guys are with the women..
So from what I hear from parents, male shaving of whatever- is popular since it scores points with the women...
For those of us who think male shaving , other than the face..is abnormal...I understand it is popular to help dude's out with the chicks...So does that make the male more manly...? Confusing world...

This statement is erroneous! Hospitals are not getting away from this! Patients are shaved in the Operating Room, Emergency Room, and other exam rooms all the time. Imagine having back surgery without shaving the patients hair first. The risk of having a follicle fall in the incision and cause an infection is to great. I work with patients all the time in a hospital, and I'm a student in the medical profession.

Sorry FXjohn, a swing and a miss on this one!

HaagenDas 03-19-05 04:52 PM

Funny, during my recent knee replacement surgery they didn't shave my legs and I wondered if they'd plain forgotten and no one in theatre noticed or if someone had decided it wasn't worth it anymore. I know the surgeon is regarded as one bloke paranoid about infection.

bstract:
This retrospective review of infectious complications was undertaken at two craniofacial centers (Dallas and Philadelphia). Fourteen infections were identified over a 6.5-year period in 567 intracranial procedures primarily for craniosynostosis. There were no infections in infants under 13 months of age and no cases of meningitis. The overall infection rate was 2.5 percent, and 85 percent of infections occurred in secondary reoperative cases. Tracheostomies were not identified as a risk factor for infection. No difference was found in infection rates between patients with shaved and unshaved scalps.

OMFG!!!! I can't believe I just read all 4 pages of this thread. Talk about ten minutes of my life that I can never get back.......

But - in the sake of trying to make this thread reach 5 pages - REAL MEN DON'T SHAVE THEIR LEGS.

snowy 04-20-05 12:15 PM

Really boys, Do really need to shave your legs and really are you falling that much that you have roadrash??? Just a question. Now, if your women loves then so be it, cause we want to keep her happy, but I'm amazed by how many people just do it for the plain and simple reason of doing it. I find it interesting. I road and mountain bike and I'm a girl and yes I have skinned my knees a few times and the side of my thigh, but each time I just let the hair grow in that area tell it heals. There is no way I'm taking a razor to my leg with a open sore on it. As far as infection, whats a little hair going to do, just keep it clean.

Ok, Ok, now I will get off my soapbox.

Then how do you fill your scab jar?

Nice!! Very Nice Powers2b.

Eggplant Jeff 04-20-05 01:59 PM

For crying out loud, does it bother you THAT much if someone wants to shave their legs? The guy asks a couple of specific details about the process (how often, growing back time, etc) and some people get on huge rants about how no guys should shave their legs ever.

What's wrong with a little open-mindedness? If YOU don't want to shave your legs, don't! I'm not going to. Doesn't mean I have to stop every other guy from shaving.

If it really is a complete myth that it makes road rash less painful, then he'll quit after the he realizes it's more work than it's worth. If he's really doing it because it makes his pantyhose slide on easier, that's his business now isn't it?

So are we supposed to wear the pantyhose under or over the bike shorts?
Are regular or control top more aerodynamic?
This sport gets more complex every year

Enjoy

I support the traditional definition of men's legs.

SpiderMike 04-20-05 03:13 PM

I shave in the summer, only cuz its easier to survive riding in 96+degree temps with 80+ percent humidity.

So um... Unshaven how long is your leg hair?

I just plucked one that was easily 1.5 inches. I'd say my average is .8 to 1.2 inches. I can see where not shaving would cause some amount of wind resistance, but I'd guess no more than say, a loose fitting shirt compared to a skin tight shirt... Difference of minute fractions of seconds in race times... any actual research done on this?

IF I ever go into professional racing I will not shave my legs just to spite the other shavers.
