I live in a small community of about 71K people. We have a Roadie bike shop, a cruiser/utility bike shop and a Trek bike shop all within seven miles of each other.

Just shows. Now if the O.P. would only give out the community he lives in, perhaps an ambitious bicycle dealer might look at expansion in his community. That or the O.P. should start attending Chamber of Commerce mixers and see if he can find a partner.

Lower dollar sales means you need more sales volume to cover the overhead. How would you market yourself?

If indeed this is a real town with a real college unless you were at the base of Mount Witney and the college was at the top it would market itself. Shoot with 140k of people and 8000 students Performance would put a store there. I have seen them in smaller towns. I would think? Wait it isn't Black Hawk Colorado I hope.

Do you know about the Shoals Cycling Initiative? If you're on Facebook you can visit them at https://www.facebook.com/SCIAL?sk=info. Their members might have advice on resources in the area.

I guess I'm just a freak. I have never purchased anything bicycling related online and love checking out bike shops. A healthy LBS is worth far more to the local cycling scene than me potentially saving a few bucks.

As related to me a couple of years ago by a LBS small shop (now closed) owner: Customer walks into his store (customer lived 1 block away) for a tube. Owner says here it is, $4. Customer says they are only $3 at China Mart. Owner says he can't sell at $3, but do you really want to drive 10 miles to save $1? Customer says no way he's going to be ripped off for $4 and walks out the door. Shop owner was a competent mechanic with prices usually a little below list, plus he was always willing to order things for me. I really miss that shop. It's a tough business.
