Mileage tracking

Doing a quick internet search, there are numerous mileage tracking sites. I am looking for some suggestions from experience using any of them.

Looking to track miles from commuting and other rides. Would be nice to be able to add comments. A smartphone app linked to it would be a nice to have but do not want to just use a smartphone app.

I have seen mention of http://bikejournal.com

I've been using SportyPal on my smartphone. Runs on Droid of iPhone and you can also manually input a ride. http://www.sportypal.com

I use and really like:

http://bikejournal.com

I like that you can compare your mileage with others.

An Excel file, bikejournal.com, dailymile.com, and (!!!!!!!) a handwritten journal wherein I note where I start/finish, a brief comment on the weather conditions, and some comments about where I went and what I did, and including Elapsed Time and which bike.

Very timely thread! I'm wanting to start tracking my mileage as well. I've noticed quite a few who use pedalmybike, but it doesn't describe how it works. Anybody know if it's manual input of data or is it some kind of electronic mumbo jumbo?

I got a Garmin GPS for Christmas, so now I use Garmin Connect to track my rides. However, I also have a computer on my bike and I record the details of my rides in my journal, and put them all into an Excel spreadsheet as well.

^I also use pedalmybike.com, and it's just manual input of data. Very easy. :)

I use bikejournal, too. I pay the membership fee, but I've never used more than the basic stuff offered for free.

Zero miles so far this year!

Machka 01-02-12 08:05 PM

I use bikejournal, Big Dogs, and an Excel spreadsheet.

Doohickie 01-02-12 08:11 PM

I use an Excel spreadsheet with pivot tables to break it down however I want.

I have to give a big vote for www.strava.com

The site is extremely easy to use. Keeps all kinds of data from your rides. Works with iphone and android. It also has a lot of social networking features. The down side is it's mostly GPS based so if you input your stuff manually you miss a lot of the features.

The really cool thing is segments, so you can create your own segments and compare yourself to every other time you've ridden an area and also against every other person that's done it.

I've been beta testing a new app version for them and they're dedicated to making things better, which I like. I have no affiliation with them, I'll add as a disclaimer...just really like it.

http://www.pedalmybike.com
It is pretty basic and looks pretty darn easy to use. It also has a banner
http://pedalmybike.com/userTrackies/myTrackie4371.jpg
No comments or additional info to add to ride details.

http://www.bikejournal.com
Kind of the opposite of above. You can add oodles of information. Adding ride are a little more then a few seconds and quick clicks.

http://www.dailymile.com
Did not try. Website main page layout kind of detracted my interest and there were no details or screen shots of it without signing up.

Think I may try out pedalmybike first, unless more recommendations come up. Neither of the above seem to have an android app. Not looking for interactive gps tracking or details. But a quick way to add miles to log. Thanks all.

I used the free bikejournal membership previously. This year I'm trying out bikewire.net. It has premium features like saved routes and more, all for free.

Be sure to type bikewire.net, because bikewire.com redirects you to bikewire.org, a site for bike couriers :twitchy:

I've been using http://www.mycyclinglog.com/ . It's free, easy and has lots of features. You can track by different bikes and types of rides. It also has also has reports and charts that let you see mileage, altitude, speed, ride time and calories by week, month or year. You can compare them to previous years too.
I also use http://ridewithgps.com/ for mapping and tracking routes. It gives you mileage and elevation and does automatic turn by turn directions. You can save and share routes with other members.

I use bike journal also.

Of the GPS based ones I prefer ridewithgps. Strava is good too.

StephenH 01-03-12 12:18 PM

I use bikejournal.

DataJunkie 01-03-12 01:49 PM

I use bikejournal as well. I use SportTracks as my backup.

no1mad 01-03-12 06:02 PM

As you can see below, I signed up for pedalmybike. However, I went to log my miles and they aren't showing up. Is there a lag time on their servers before showing up in the Trackie?

tsl 01-03-12 07:40 PM

I've used Bikejournal.com, since 2006.

If you're a commuter, we've got a special place just for you:

2012 Commuter Cycling Century Challenge. One year, 100 round-trip commutes to work.

Northwestrider 01-03-12 08:06 PM

bikejournal.com is what I use. Like tsl above ^ I've used it for a long time.

+1 for Strava, either use a Garmin or smartphone app...great site...

Geodistance, useful if you don't have a cycle computer or gps, really good for marking out from A to B and precalculating distances before you actually ride them. Another one is just use google maps and sign up with an account. I prefer geodistance as I need no account what so ever.

Here the site http://www.geodistance.com/

I use Strava, have an Edge 800 and you know what I use the most? I print out a blank monthly calendar and write in the daily mileage and comments! To me, my mind registers a lot more personal info by looking at a week prior, this week, and planning next week. I do write in the ongoing Edge info as well (cadence, avg speed, time of known route, etc.)

Cyclist0084 01-05-12 10:00 PM

I've been using bikejournal since 2005. Just recently came across mycyclinglog, and I think I'll be using that as a back-up.

Also use the tried and true Excel spreadsheet.

:)

scaryseth 01-05-12 10:32 PM

Thanks all for more suggestions.
So far Pedalmybike is good for forum sig, there are no details so it is only good for milage, rounded out to nearest mile.
I have been using bikejournal and it is growing on my. After only a few days, unsure yet.
Took a look at my cycling log and it looked interesting. So I am going to give that one a try as well.

Still not seeing any that have a smart phone app for quick updating of rides. Am not looking for gps updates, just the ability to update the log. For detailed GPS tracking and states, when desired I use and am happy with My Tracks. Love that but only use for longer rides and exploring new places. That app you can upload to google maps/google doc.
