Looking for new bike

Hi. I am seeking some of your opinions. I am currently looking for a new mountain bike. I am currently looking at a these bikes that I have found at stores in my area. They are the K2 Zed (1.0?), and Diamondback Outlook. I did see the Mongoose Deception at Wal-Mart, but I am hesitant to buy a bike that is sold at Wal-Mart. I do not want spend more than $300, so before you say I should, its not an option. I will use this bike on trails and on paved paths/road, but nothing extreme. Thanks.

Also, I was just on craigslist and found this close to where I live, 2009 Specialized Hardrock for $250. Its a 19" frame and I'm 5'10 so it should be a good fit.

I think you should ask this question in the Mountain Biking forum. Around here there are lots of MTBs on Craigslist and you might be able to find a good deal on a recent model one. The 2009 seems like it might be worth a look. Perhaps there is a sticky in the MTB forum on how to purchase a used MTB. If it was owned by a little old lady, it might have had an easy life.

The Hardrock would definitely be a (large) step up from a HelMart bike. $250 is an okay price. Also look for comparable Giant, Trek and Jamis bikes. BikePedia will help you with comparing them. If you go a little older (2003 to 2005) you might be able to find a little better quality, like a Rockhopper, for the same money.

Always providing the condition of the bike is OK, buy a good used bike instead of a cheap new one.

You may also consider checking your local goverment and seeing if they have bicycle auctions. Here in Denver we have a bicycle bureau that auctions off bikes that were abandonded or confiscated and the like. I picked up a 2004 specialized hardrock for $100 and all it needed was new brakes and a new cassette. Put $40 into it and it rides great. There were some other very nice bikes a such as a specialized rockhopper(2009) with deore components in perfect condition and it only went for $325.
