Why mount it on the handlebar?

I carry my 3GS on all my road and mountain bike rides. I carry it in a zip lock bag in either my rear jersey pocket or the mesh outside pocket of my pack. I use MotionX GPS on many of my rides and it works fine when carried as described.

If I need the phone - I stop the bike and look at the phone - it works fine inside the zip lock.

Quite a big one, but seems to offer a lot of protection and it's got a hole in the bottom for the charging lead, which is very helpful considering I use an external battery on mine.

Comes with two gel inserts - one iPhone 4 shape and one 3G shape. Works with my 4S very well, but I don't know what Siri thinks of the routes :P

I have went full circle on what I wanted for my iPhone on my bike. I started with really wanting it handlebar mounted and to be able to have all its tracking features right there to watch. I then found that also runs the battery down pretty fast and added a homemade charging station to the mix. I have always liked a small bar bag on the bike facing me for wallet and stuff I carry that when I stop I like to take with me. I ran like that for a year with my 3G and most of last year with my i4 using an otter case.

This year the light came on that I don’t need or want the phone right in my face all day it can be a safety distraction also. I noticed when attached to the bars that sometimes sunlight got it pretty warm as well. My plan now is to keep it inside the bar bag where it’s in the shade and dry. I can still use it for music etc thru one of those little portable speaker units. And if I get a call or want to check directions I can pull to the side and do that if I’m going to be talking for a bit while riding I just leave the bag open and use the phone on speaker mode. I still run my cycle app and track the ride I just don’t watch it during the ride. Hasn’t changed my use at all just personally don’t need the visual distraction. Like I said I was a big fan of it on the bars for two years. I still have my old bike computer that tells me speed on the bar that’s all I really need on the bars.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a GPS tracker for I Phone that will allow you to review and random route that you took on a given day (with mileage)?

If I have a strong dislike of a topic I tend to skip reading the thread and save myself the high blood pressure meds.:o

I am looking for a I phone mount as well but I use a supplemental battery/case.

There are countless reasons why someone would want to have their phone at the ready and there are countless reasons why it should be put away.

I could turn this around on you and say that you should get that phone out already so it could be easier to get in touch with you. You sound like an old fart who is stubbornly sticking to the old ways.

Maybe a little patience for the new guy is in order here? Clearly there are a lot of people who like their cell phones at the ready and you can't understand that. Sad.

I don't (yet) do this myself but if you visit the touring forum there is information on using the iPhone, with various apps, as a navigation device and thereby eliminating the need for paper maps. In those circumstances a hhandlebar mount would be very handy.

I didn’t see your post the other day. I also use a battery case and most of them are not made to take exposure to the elements and with them on wont fit any of the waterproof cases and handlebar system. The way I did it last year was to switch cases for riding and use a different method of charging while riding. This year I have got over the urge to have the phone right in front of me and keep it in my small handlebar bag that I can access in two seconds when needed and the rest of the time it’s not a distraction and IMO it is safer for the phone also to be stored out of the sun and such.

My plan is to put a patch of Velcro on the back of my mophie case and also a place in the bag that keeps the phone above the contents of the bag. I wouldn’t trust Velcro to hold the phone out in the open but inside a padded bag I think it will be fine.

As mentioned above everyone has a different take on even having a phone with them let alone how you use it. I enjoyed it out in my vision and as a personal choice I like it along now but just out of site. If I get a call or text or need to check the weather or a map I just pull over and put on my reading glasses and do what I need to do and get going again. I have answered a call while riding and with the speaker phone feature it’s not very distracting if I’m out on the open road. Music, Radio, etc are the same thing for me open road sure in traffic never.

I love having the iPhone along on rides. Already accustomed to bringing a cell phone in the pack for emergency/support calls when I attained the iPhone it went on the beltpack on my back waist. I route the earbuds cord up over my back and everything stays out of the way. Pandora and biking rocks.
