I rode with a backpack for a long time before I became a member of the Church of the Holy Pannier...My backpack used to get so sweaty and smelly, especially in the summer, and my jerseys took forever to dry in back. I still find myself panicking occasionally because I think I forgot my bag, but now the bike carries it instead of my shoulders doing the work.

I've ridden with backpacks for quite a few years. My most recent one is a light Northface technical type day pack which I really like. Last year, though, I did some damage to 3 of my lumbar discs (something I'm still recovering from) and the pack thing isn't working for me anymore. I've been bugeeiing the pack to the rack on my touring bike so far this year. Just bought a Lone Peak handlbar pack and 2 clamps for it so I can use it on the 2 bikes I ride the most, and am ditching the packpack for good.
