Super heavy security chain source?
Just moved into a new apartment. there is nothing whatsoever easily available that is of a suitable size and shape to lock our bikes to, but a number of things that are fixed. My thought is to get some heavy contractor security chain, similar to the high end chain locks, and leave a loop of it locked to itself wrapped around a post to lock our bikes to. However, the bike locks aren't long enough, and i'm having a hard time finding a source for just the chain itself. Anyone know where to find it and what, exactly, to search for? The hardware stores here are at a loss.

Don't you have enough space to lock your bikes to the wall or the ceiling?

We lack the strength to do that on a regular basis. Wife is petite and rides a steel frame cruiser and has enough frustration getting it on a bus rack. Mine is a cargo bike with heavy baskets and again a bit of a beast. I'm not always around to help her with her bike.

All the major hardware stores (lowes, home depot, Ace, ect...) sell large chain. Personally, I would go for insulated high-strengh cable. It's stronger, prettier, and easier to work with. I believe it's generally cheaper too.
Remember to check the strength of your lock. You don't want a monster cable with a lock that's easier to cut. |
Look in the phone book for a steel supply source. Maybe a automotive equipment store. Not an autoparts store. You need a case hardened chain. A frame straightning chain would work. With all of the industrial marine supply places in your area they would be a good source as well. Just remember case hardened.
