I was nailed by a woman at 17.
What can I say? She was more experienced than I.

But seriously folks... its about being seen.

Curb hugging on too narrow windy roads will get you killed.
Curb hugging on too narrow secondary 4-ways will get you killed.

Main street in my city is a 4 lane with no reasonable way to share the outside lane.
So I take it. You have to take it. You have the right to take it.

Dont' be a dick about it though. Act like this is just the way it is.
Wave at the friendly honks.

Cars don't worry me as much as some other things

Things that have hit me while riding my bike:
Deer
Dog
Truck (x3)
Car (x2)
Beer Bottle
Other bicyclist (x3)
Tree branches
Road debris

Things that have hit me while driving my car
Bicyclist
Car

The bike hit the right front fender of my car while I was stopped waiting to make a left turn. I was not moving and had the left turn signal but there was a pedestrian in the cross walk. The bicyclist tried to pass the pedestrian but was going too fast and swerved into my car. No injuries - just an embarrassed rider.

I got my driver's license in 1969, and I've never been involved in an accident on the roads. I anticipate what other drivers are going to do, and drive defensively. This includes the 25 years that I lived in the NYC Metro area.

The best defense against being struck by a motor vehicle is to think ahead and anticipate trouble before it happens. Know the warning signs. A car stopped on a two lane road and not turning is likely giving way to a left turning vehicle coming the other way---don't pass inside on the right. Anticipate the infamous right hook, where a vehicle passes you and then turns right at the next cross street. Some drivers think that every bike on the road is going about 5 mph.

Especially with more and more morons on their smartphones

If you have to ride in that kind of traffic, it's like river dancing through a minefield.

I seem to recall a study that shows that bike commuting significantly increases life expectancy, indicating that the health benefits significantly outweigh the risks, but I'm too lazy to look it up for you.

There was news of a study of people who completed a tour de France. They lived over 12 years longer than average.

Riding a sofa in front of a tv is inherently risky too. The old heart attack can sneak up and hit you.

We both walked away...but the dent in the motor home was bigger than the bump on my widdle head. :thumb:

Indianapolis has put in alot of bike lanes and a few people have been hit this year.I think 1 of the best ways to ride and be safe is not ride in rush hour when people have road rage.

Wear a helmet and you"ll be fine.

They may have been genetically blessed and the exercise irrelevant.
