Sound like a fun idea?

Cheap cotton bartape would do.
I wouldn't use gel or padded - too bulky.
I guess it would have to be a metal post and not carbon, as carbon needs to be inspected pretty frequently. At least I would.

Just do it!

Then post back and tell us what you think in a month or so. Worst case, you can undo it a lot more easily than a bad black paint job.

Benotto Cello tape used to be dirt cheap and perfect for messing around with the color scheme of your bike. It seems to be back, but lost its dirt-cheapness.
