The Normandy invasion represented one of the heroic high points in liberating Europe from the Axis. Something like 9,000 men gave their lives on those beaches. That toe-hold was so important to the Allied cause. Today's the anniversary.

More likely British or Canadian troops than French. Aside from the "Kieffer commandos" of Free France, I don't think another French contingent made a beach landing. Some FF Army paratroopers dropped inland, but I'm not familiar with compagnie Kieffer taking any bikes in with them.
