need new pump
 

I got a walmart pump that happens to have both schrader and presta genitalia. The schrader valve isn't working so well. The problem with it is it gets stuck on the valve when I pull on it, so when I pull too hard, part of the tube comes out; and if I pull too slowly, the pressure drops down to 75 psi. I don't even know if the gauge is correct.

Where can I find a good, inexpensive durable schrader pump?




PS I have a road bike and I pump it up to ~95 psi, but it almost never stay that way when I detach the pump.

I like your location but I'm not familiar with the bike shop situation there.

I'd shop my local bike store first they maybe are pretty good and have some good, durable pumps.

Failing that I'd buy a Topeak pump from Amazon. They make good pumps and offer EXCELLENT customer service if you have a problem.

Road bike, Shrader valve, and 95 psi are not often used in one sentence.

I have a Road Morph G, and it's small and has no problem getting up to over 100psi (though you have to put a little shoulder muscle into the last 10 psi...)It can do presta or schrader, though as Nermal said above: Schrader on a road bike?

I wondered about that but couldn't figure out how to say it without seeming snarky.

My hybrid does have tires that like 90 psi and have schrader valves so I thought 'could be'.

Try a little oil in the air chuck first.

oil didn't do the trick; I've tried it. I also tried to ram a screw down the hole to make more room, but that made the surface uneven, and I think it made the problem worse.

I had always thought that presta is much better at retaining air, until a local bike shop mechanic told me they were the same. I guess I should go back to presta tubes then, considering my walmart pump does a decent job with those valves.

does anyone happen to know the name of the fitting that you would put in a schrader rim to turn it into a presta rim? I used to have one for my front wheel, until that one pinched a hole in the front tube. Then I switched to schrader in my front wheel.

I'm a little stumped. I've looked around, and there's no difference b/t schrader and presta in terms of air retention. So why aren't schrader valves suitable for 95 psi? I have a vintage bike, not one of those carbon fiber ones.

couple things-
wheels mfg makes a nice schrader to presta converter, part # pss-1; slips over the presta stem & fills the schrader hole.
imho - cheap, good and reliable don't coincide for a pump - suggest one of the lezye floor pumps. or an alloy drive hand pump if you need an on road pump.

Presta valve stems are smaller diameter, allowing a smaller hole in the wheel. Road bikes have narrow wheels, and a Schrader sized hole weakens the rim. How much, and at what pressure it becomes critical is beyond my knowledge. The actual quality of the rim could also make a difference.

Schrader valves are fine at 95 psi. The stem holes for schrader valves are larger than those for presta, which is important on the narrow rims used on racing bikes (which are not synonymous with road bikes). I.e., the larger hole can make the narrow rim significantly weaker at that point.
