Flight Deck Problems

Hi

This is my first post and have no clue.

I just switched my Flightdeck from blue bike(worked fine on last ride) to white bike now it gives me speed and cadence but the timer will not start and the distance does not work.

If it's a connecting pin problem or cleaning problem I could fix myself I would like to know without sending it to shimano or throwing it into the trash can.

I love the flight deck so far and have had no other problems.

The computer is not starting, The button that starts it is not making contact somehow. Could be the rubber hood, Peel back the hood and try it. then take this thread to another location to ask for more help,If that does not work. It could be inside the sti lever or on the harness itself,or even the mount.

I have no experience with Flight deck. Since it reads speed it is getting its signal from the wheel (or crank), and since it reads cadence it is getting its info on the gear from the STi. I therefore think the problem is with the start switch. The distance is calculated by counting turns and multiplying - if the start switch doesnt work it wont know that it has to start counting. Ask about this on the mechanics forum, or the road forum where there are a lot more flight deck users.

I've been throught this three times. You are exactly right. I'm going to try and go one step at a time.

Thanks for treating the newbie with care. :-)
I forgot to say that my wifes computer works fine on both my bikes soooooo it has to be in the unit itself. The no start senerio sounds good I'll try to play with the rubber hood and see.

I'll look around the forum and find the ones suggested

I have never done a fourm before so I am pretty much lost.

If you want to learn more about me and my bicycling go to our website (found in my profile) from products, click on the bicycle :-)

Thanks again

The hints about the rubber hood are probably right on: peel back the hood, unscrew the connector that the wires go into, and check to see if the little shim is installed that Shimano supplies with their installation kit. If not, I think a piece of black electrical tape folded over a couple of times will suffice as a shim.

You will see that Shimano's design here leaves a little to be desired - wire ends in a flat connector that is basically just folded over itself to make a little spring force to create contact. Since you switched bikes, it is very likely that the old bike had the shims, or the guts inside the levers were manufactured to different tolerances (there is always variation), and the contact is faulty in the new levers.

P.S: I had to do this quick fix and I love my Flight Deck. The symptom with mine was that it did not register shifting on the front derailleur. Same root cause, though: faulty contact.

Agreed, this has happened to me as well.

Dammit, I'm having the same problem with mine, front derailleur doesn't register. Pretty fresh set of ST-6510's & a brand new flightdeck & harness. I've had a couple of beers and now a 94 Coonawarra Cab Sav so I will save shagging around with shims until morning. They seen pretty fiddly, hope its all worth it.

I fitted a small shim in the lhs lever (front derailleur) and it now works. First impressions with the whole system running as it should were good. I broke a record on my usual ride, I think it's because I was more aware of my cadence which was too low. They are really difficult to get the hang of though, there should be an easier manual for actual on-the-road use as opposed to setup. Thanks all, & sorry to ressurrect this post, but I figured better that then start another "problems with flightdeck" post. Over & out.

I need help!

After two years of smooth running my Flight Deck 6501 started displaying a pattern of 111, 222, 333, etc. after a ride in the rain. I finally had to pop the battery out to stop it. I figured that I might as well replace the battery since I had to reprogram the thing anyway. I also replaced the battery at the wireless transmitter end. After reprogramming I was able to get speed and cadence but not distance, max speed, avg speed, etc. After several frustrating attempts I bought a new 6502 (head only) on eBay. With it I got the same result (except that the programming would only show 1 front ring or 3, not the 2 I desired). The older unit at least showed the double ring and gave me the proper cadence. I looked under the rubber hoods and I'm not sure what I'm looking for. The buttons (both A on the left and B on the right) work fine from the handlebars. I took a pencil eraser to the contacts but the results are still the same - speed but not distance. It's getting annoying (not to mention I bought the 6502 that I don't need - anyone interested?)
