My 1st ride
I am 30 y.o. and never learned to ride growing up because of my father fear of I don't know-- something. I never learned to swim either and I grew up on an island. After making up my mind and buying a cheap bike, didn't want to put a lot of money into something I might hate. I learned to ride yesterday morning-- had to wake up at 6am to learn for the embrassment I am well known in the community because I coach.
I used the balance down the hill method, then after like 5 times I just started pedal at the bottom of the hill and rode around the for about 5 minute. I tried riding up the hill to no avail, I brought a single speed bike to learn.
This morning I decide to go for a ride and woke up at 5am when there is minimal traffic on the street, I rode for 1.5miles before coming home. I fell off my bike 3 times in the beginning but got back on to finish the loop. Its kind of scary at times when I was going 20mph I had to brake but I LOVE it. I plan to ride the loop regularly till I get a total controll of the bike then travell around the city. I also am saving my money to get a better bike next season probably March.
I MUST SAY I SEARCHED THIS SITE ON WAYS TO LEARN AND IT HAVE HELP A LOT.

Thanks guys.
I took a swimming class in college-- had to it was a requirement, never went to class but begged the prfessor for a 'D'. Got it and got my degree. But I am actually looking to ride my first race next April-- Just get better through the winter and go for it. Also need to lose like 20lbs.

Wow. I'm impressed. Not only am I happy for you learning to ride, I'm equally sad that you didn't get to ride as a kid. Oh well. It just means that you have to make up for it. Ride like a kid husigma. But, as has been said, be safe. Learn bike safety. And by all means have fun!!

Good start! Don't be shy about spending time in empty parking lots or on empty streets practicing specific skills or movements.

That's freaking awesome man. Not simply because you're learning, but because you're older, and you're doing it because you never knew how; it's great.
But yea man, if you're fine with waking up early, keep doing it, and don't push it until you feel comfortable with your skills. Find a bike that works for you, and you'll get better at it every day.
In a week or two you'll be riding around town like you've done it your entire life.
I would highly suggest reading the threads here

For more information and knowledge, as well as perfecting technique; whenever you're ready.
